WWE Says Don’t Call Them A Wrestling Company

The WWE is going that extra mile to not be associated with wrestling. They want to be known as a entertainment company, we their name is World WRESTLING Entertainment, and their biggest promoted show each year is WRESTLEmania.
A publicist for World Wrestling Entertainment demanded last week that a television industry news website not refer to them as a wrestling company.
The website in question, TVWeek.com, ran a story on Drew Carey’s induction into the WWE Hall of Fame last week with the headline “Drew Carey Inducted Into Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame. Huh? Drew Carey??!!” The headline drew the ire of WWE publicist Kellie Baldyga, who sent a stern e-mail to the author demanding that the headline be ‘corrected’.
Baldyga wrote in her email, “We are no longer a wrestling company but rather a global entertainment company with a movie studio, international licensing deals, publisher of three magazines, consumer good distributor and more.”
During a subsequent phone conversation, the publicist stated, “No, we don’t do wrestling events. They’re entertainments. And we don’t call them wrestlers. They’re superstars and divas.”
Rather than change the headline, the article was removed from the website altogether. Baldyga sent a follow-up e-mail, reading, “I know the perception is that we are a wrestling company but we are actually much more than that–we are a global media company which is how our Chairman and CEO, Vince McMahon, positions us.”

This thing goes back to WCW I remember Vince saying in the interview when Ted Turner called him telling him hes creating WCW Ted Said " Hey Vince Im getting into the wrassling business", Vince replied " Thats great Ted but Im in the sports entertainment business". This was from an old as WWF magazine in like 2000.

Well, that's what it mostly consist of just entertainment. It really isn't wrestling, it's half-assed wrestling. I watches SD for the first time all the way through in years and damn did I see a lot of half-assed ? . Many moves not going through all the way or just being ? up, SMH

Wrestling is Entertaining
But if they do away with the ring, what would they have? They center their entire product around individuals who are trained to wrestle. If these dudes/gals weren't trained, then what would they be and what would they be doing? The publicist said they are superstars/divas, but outside of the ring, they are nothing. They still need to workout and train to maintain their position in the grand scheme of things.
The WWE seems to want everyone to look and listen to what the wrestler is about, then focus in on their in-ring ability. So they want a dude/female who looks like those old school wrestling figures with the ripped abs and great hair, then they will see what they can do with them in the ring. If that's the case, get rid of the ring and have nothing but skits on the shows, if they want to entertain people the way they're trying to condition people to be entertained. -

I remember back in the 90s when ANYONE could be in UFC. ? coming out in torn jeans and cowboy boots, brawling and getting mopped. There were no weight classes and style clashes happened all the time (BJJ vs. brawler), just dudes fighting to see who was the best. Tap outs were optional, and you saw dudes get their ? broken and/or pass/choked out all the time. Then McCain came in and threatened to have that ? banned unless they cleaned it up.
now the WWE answers to corporate sponsors, forcing them to change their product and going away from what they once were. And in doing so, they lost their own identity... -

you can't say it, you can't reference it, you have to call it what they want it to be. They are truly trying to program the next generation of watchers to call wrestling something else.
just as Paul Heyman said, "to Vince, wrestling is a ? word".

And to think TNA has in my mind the best roster but wont just let them wrestle and still comes off as a ? wwe lite....

I cant believe this is real ACTION SOAP OPERA....WTF is that ? ?!?!? !!!! -
But they "arent" tho.... the WWE is a merchandising & entertainment co. more goes into the storylines & building wrestlers into entertainers (so they can sell merchandise, the WWE has 1.1 billion dollars in revenue u think all that comes from shows ?) than it is about the actual wrestling. Randy Orton, John Cena, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz are NOT good wrestlers but u know what ? they got great mic skills & can hold a crowd. Cena sold something like 10 million T-shirts alone w/ his chain gang ? . If skills paid the bills in the WWE Christian, Kofi Kingston, Evan Bourne, John Morrison, R-Truth, Ted Dibiase & guys like that would World Champs. The WWE used to be a wrestling company but today its an entertainment company.
