I believe youre talking about a enclosure
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=92&name=External-Enclosures
I just swapped my 160gb for a 250gb yesterday in my slim, its weird I used the back up utility but it still erased some of the stuff, like some of my dlc I got from gamesharing was missing(I still got all my games) but I just redownloaded them -
in cloud storage? i dont think DLC gets saved. it needs to be redownloaded.
but yeah, thats what i needed, an enclosure. thx

ok so i bought an enclosure, fits fine, but when i plug into my laptop, it refuses to pick it up as a USB stick or separate drive with removable storage. doesnt even give the option to format it.

which enclosure did you buy? also does it have and external power supply -
i bought a cheap one from micro center. brand called inland. no it doesnt have an external power supply.just a normal case with a usb connector.
little green light turns on when i connect it and i hear it whirling so its connected fine. computer just wont read it as a USB. neither will the ps3 -

then there are 2 possibilities.
1. the usb port is not providing the drive enough power. it's still an internal drive and they require more power than your normal external drive. [some compensate by having 2 usb plugs]
2. it's a POS.
either way return it and get a better one.
vantec and sabrent are good brands for enclosures.
I use a 3.5" drive in my external enclosure it requires a external power source.
