Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Teaser Lands
'Things aren't always what they seem'
30 June 2011 | Source: The Guardian

A British movie we have huge hopes for is Working Title's adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. There's a new teaser trailer, out now and debuted by the lucky blighters at The Guardian, that only raises them to possibly unsustainable levels. No pressure or anything. Now this is how to make a thriller teaser.

Among the smoke and mirrors, there's a brief intro to all the major players at MI6. There's Benedict Cumberbatch as Peter Guillam, head of the no-nonsense 'Scalphunters' (think the bit of MI6 Jason Statham would be in), and Mark Strong as betrayed ? Jim Prideaux. Gary Oldman is front and centre as methodical, intuitive ex-spymaster George Smiley, brought out of retirement to unearth a mole at the heart of British intelligence. Not an actual mole - that'd be weird - but a Soviet spy planted by the KGB's Karla, leaking secrets to the Russians that are costing the lives of British agents.

If you like your spies running, shooting and jumping off things - and there's nothing wrong with that - M:i 4 is where you need to be. M:i6 is a more cerebral place and Tinker, Tailor is unashamedly a thriller from the old school: a world of nuance and double-crosses; weapons-grade intellects and sudden violence.

By the looks of things, it's as beautifully crafted a period piece as you'd expect from Working Title, not to mention director Tomas Alfredson, the man who recreated '80s Sweden so memorably in Let The Right One In. Like the classic BBC dramatisation of the Le Carré novel, Tinker, Tailor is set against the grime and fast-fading grandeur of cold war Britain.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is out in the UK on September 16. If you're in American you'll have to wait a little longer: it's out there on November 18.

New Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Trailer
A fresh look at Oldman's mole hunt
04 August 2011 | Written by Ali Plumb | Source: MSN Movies

We don’t want to overcook this one, but Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy looks absolutely ? amazing. After the stunning posters that have hit the net recently and the initial teaser trailer back in late June, the excitement in the office ihas been almost palpable.

Then a new, longer trailer arrived today – and boy is it good.

Featuring more footage of more of the cast, we see plenty of Tom Hardy’s Ricki Tarr and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Peter Guillam, as well as – of course – Gary Oldman’s George Smiley.

The nervousness about the film not being able to match the original TV series’ quality has all but evaporated now – the only worry being whether they’ll be able to cram on all of John le Carré’s plotstrands in just one movie.

That, of course, still waits to be seen, but after watching this new trailer (again) we’re increasingly enthusiastic about its upcoming release in September.

Who knows, maybe this will be one to get Oldman his Oscar – it seems so unfair that it still says “Gary Oldman, BAFTA winner” in his trailers…

Anyway, check out the video below and when you’re done, let us know your thoughts on the adaption of the Spy classic in the comment box below.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is out September 16. Oh, and if you're looking for an in-depth look at the film, you best check out our feature on it in this month's magazine, which is on shelves now.

New Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Posters
Colin Firth and Tom Hardy go digital
16 August 2011 | Written by Ali Plumb | Source: Sky Movies

On July 19, 2011, the internet came into possession of a Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy poster that showed Gary Oldman's George Smiley transformed into numbers. It was universally acclaimed as "? good".

So it should come as no surprise that those clever folks behind the John Le Carre adapation at Working Title have released two very similar characters posters, depicting Colin Firth's Bill Haydon and Tom Hardy's Ricki Tarr lines of code too.

We reckon they also deserve to be filed in the "? good" section of your spymaster filofax, no? In fact, they're so good, they makes us want to watch the trailer again, so we're off to do that now.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy will be being all moody and thrilling on your local cinema screens come September 16.

Early reviews are in and this is looking like it's gonna be brilliant. Gary Oldman for a possible Oscar nod:

Back frm a screening of TTSS. It’s AMAZING & you’re going to LOVE it.Oldman will be Oscar hunting & Tom Hardy is just wonderful
I promise you’ll love it. Cld even be better than BBC adaption. There I said it Well it’s only 2hrs long so alot of character background is left out.. The plot is all there & cold war paranoia is perfect
Of course it’s diff take on classic, but I promise you won’t be disappointed. And it’s acting masterclass
Hardy steals it (nearly) him and Oldman on screen together is electrifying.. You just want it to keep on going forever
Great and with pitch perfect amt of Camp.. But Tom Hardy & Oldman are just superb
As for Oscars, I’d like to think Oldman is in with a shout..

    From a journalist's twitter:

New Tinker Tailor movie is terrific. Completely different to the BBC classic: compressed, cruel, dark and retro camp. Oldman great as Smiley
Q: is Tom Hardy as awesome as is usual?
he is outstanding - perfectly cast.

New Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Clip
    Be suspicious; be very suspicious
    02 September 2011 | Written by Helen O'Hara | Source: Exclusive

Boasting what is surely a contender for Greatest Cast Ever Assembled and based on a classic spy novel by John Le Carre, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is one of the more exciting films lined up for this autumn season. And as a special Friday treat, here's a little snippet from the film that lays out some of the suspects in the Cold War-set thriller.

We get a glimpse here of Control (John Hurt), the man at the top of the "Circus", Britain's foreign intelligence agency (or MI6 to you and me) in the early 1970s. He briefs agent Jim Prideaux (Mark Strong) in the hunt for the mole, assigning code-names to each of the suspects in the hunt. You'll also catch a glimpse here of Gary Oldman's George Smiley, who becomes the key figure in the hunt for the shadowy leak.

This clip does contain mild spoilers for the film, if you haven't read the book or come across the seminal 1979 TV series, so tread carefully.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has its official premiere at the Venice Film Festival this weekend, and will hit UK cinemas on September 16.

Saw it earlier today, thought it was great. I can definitely see this snatching a load of awards (now that its the beginning of the awards season). They need to hurry up and give Gary Oldman his Oscar.
