Rum Diary Trailer Arrives
Depp does Hunter S Thompson again
26 August 2011 | Written by James White

It took Johnny Depp to finally rescue his late lamented pal Hunter S Thompson’s The Rum Diary from development hell, where it lingered for nearly a decade before the actor was finally able to get it made via his Infinitum Nihil company. Now the trailer for the movie has arrived online and can be watched - no, experienced - below.

Rum Diary finds Depp once more playing a Thompson surrogate, though this time one step removed. He’s Paul Kemp, a ? -guzzling journalist who is sent by his editor (Richard Jenkins, boasting one of the funniest wigs to grace the screen in ages) to Puerto Rico on assignment.

In between bouts of narcotic- and alcohol-influenced madness, he stumbles on a real story, setting up a collision with a corrupt businessman (Aaron Eckhart) whose sexy young fiancée (Amber Heard) has taken a real liking to Paul.

With Bruce Robinson on writing and directing duties, The Rum Diary will stumble into our cinemas on November 4.

New Poster For The Rum Diary
    Fear & Loathing connections anyone?
    26 September 2011 | Written by Helen O'Hara | Source: Apple Trailers

Given that Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary is thoroughly sozzled but not totally high, we can't help thinking that this drunken latest poster for the Bruce Robinson film adaptation is deliberately attempting to link the film to the earlier Johnny Depp-starring adaptation of a Thompson piece,Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas. But that is no bad thing.

After all, the images released so far have tended to emphasise the film's 1950s Caribbean setting, focusing on the trendy duds and Puerto Rican atmosphere rather than the steady stream of alcohol that our hero, Paul Kemp (Depp), consumes throughout his day. This rather more tottering poster is far more in keeping with the film's pleasantly demented trailer, released a month ago today.

The Rum Diary also stars Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Giovanni Ribisi and Richard Jenkins, and will reach us on November 4.
