There are so many ideas and innovations that are being kept secret because companies cannot make profit off them. I read an article recently about a Canadian university developing a more effective and cheaper drug to fight cancer. The controversy is that if the drug is truly effective then it will probably not be available to the general public because phamaceuticals companies loss of profits. It seems corporations rather make a big buck than improve the lives of the very people they provide service to. Is this a consequence of capitalism? Or is it capitalism gone bad?

I c/s this powerful thread. There are so many innovations that are held back because it would hurt someone's profit margin. Imagine how much money would be lost if cancer or aids was cured. Imagine how much money someone would lose if more effective, non-oil related, sources of fuel were used by cars. It exists...but guess who it would hurt if it became widely available to the public? These oil and pharmaceutical companies cannot profit from alternatives & cures. Think of the lifespan & effectiveness of the everyday items that we use. We can put men in space and build aircraft that fly from the US to London in an hour, but they can't do basic ? to help everyday mankind? gtfoh

As far as I know, in practice, no other economic system produces as much incentive, and thus innovation, as capitalism does. It isn't the morally ideal system and it should be heavily regulated but it's currently what works.

Its not as clear cut as some have made it seem. So my answer would be yes & no...

No, because capitalism (im going to assume you mean laissez faire capitalism & not American "capitalism") has led to many great inventions (telegraph, steam engine etc) that would have not been invented otherwise by driving entrepreneurship among people (which socialism & communism doesnt do).

Yes, because it puts profits before people which will never benefit the people & lead to suffering among people (as the T/S stated).

I think the best method would be a mix of socialism & capitalism (which our system is...kind of... & many other countries in the world have). But i think what the t/s is getting at (and the rest of the posters are referring to is crony capitalism.

? like that is not the bi-product of capitalism itself. It's the bi-product of corrupted, selfish capitalists.

I never implied that I was dissatisfied with this country. I was more or less questioning the role of capitalism on a global level. If finding a cure for cancer was as easy leaving the country, we'd see cancer patients commuting in droves. The greed of the elite ultimatey effects the livelyhood of all individuals, regardless of what part of the world their in.

Agreed. The elite can easily be overthrown and the current system toppled. They are dependent on us, it isn't the other way around. All it takes is for us to have the will to sacrifice.
