The superhero MMO is now subscription-free.

The original superhero-themed MMO, Paragon's City of Heroes, is now officially free-to-play. The studio announced they were making the switch to free-to-play back in June, and outlined to the best of their knowledge at the time how the new business model would work.

As of today, the model has gone into action. That means that you can currently go to the City of Heroes website, sign up, and start playing for free. The switch to free-to-play comes with a brand new tutorial system that should help introduce new players to the massive buildup of content. City of Heroes has been around for seven years, after all.

The change has resulted in a rebranding of the game, which is now called City of Heroes: Freedom. Most of the core experience is available for free, but optional side missions, extra powersets, costumes and other stuff can be purchased separately. You can find out more in our City of Heroes: Freedom announcement.
