Joe Arpaio aka "America's Toughest Sheriff" been havin legal problems lately.....Feds & prosecutors circling this dude like vultures.

PHOENIX -- CBS 5 obtained some new information about how much money the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe may have misused.

Arpaio's attorneys said the board has a vendetta against the sheriff, but if the information in the in court documents is true, $50 million could have been misused.

CBS 5 got court papers that showed the Superior Court why the supervisors felt they had to issue a subpoena on Arpaio.

Some of it has been heard before, that they said the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office refused to participate in an audit, and that the board thought MCSO was trying to cover up what it was doing with taxpayer cash.

But the details found in just-released court documents were a first.

According to those documents, MCSO's Chief Financial Officer, Loretta Barkell, provided information showing nearly $500,000 of misspending in just a two-week period.

That money, according to court records, came mostly from voter-created and restricted funds.

If that's true, the board said it doesn't see any reason that would be the first time funds were misused.

It said one of Arpaio's lawyers suggested the misspending started in 2006.

The board said if all those numbers add up, Arpaio may have misspent more than $50 million taxpayer dollars in the past five years alone, according to the documents.

According to Arpaio's lawyers, it's all one big witch hunt. (hahahaha, WHERE ARE YOUR PAPERS JOE)

They said the board has an agenda because Arpaio has been investigating some of the supervisors, and he's more than happy to hand the documents over to an unbiased third party.

A board spokesperson said the numbers don't lie, and no matter who looks at them the facts and figures won't change.

We'll know by 10 a.m. Monday whether the judge grants that hearing.

"If you're worried about an ugly element in the Tea Parties, don't fret about militias, Oath Keepers, and the other alleged demons invoked by the movement's establishment critics. Arpaio represents a much more substantial menace: the threat of lawless law enforcement."

Very common when some public figure decides to use an event or issue to becoming a national figure overnight, they end up drawing more attention than they should have been looking for.
