Couple allegedly hit a woman after a night of karaoke and drinking last month in eastern China. Police suspect them of burying her alive.
A young Chinese couple who allegedly spent a ? night singing karaoke later hit a woman on their drive home. But instead of getting help, officials claim they buried the 68-year-old near a construction site, even though she may have been alive, according to newspaper reports Thursday.
The accident happened during the early morning of April 30 in the eastern province of Zhejiang, the Chinese Daily reported.
“A witness said he heard someone crying and saw an elderly woman lying on the ground,” a police official told the newspaper.
“A man and a woman got out and put the elderly woman in the car, saying they would send her to hospital,” he added.
But the suspects didn’t, opting instead to dig her grave, according to reports. A spokesman for a local public security bureau said “it’s certain the woman was not dead when buried,” the China Daily reported.
After police were alerted to the body, the woman apparently suffocated to death, officials said.
Police were still awaiting an official cause, according to Reuters.
“Preliminary judgment of the cause of death is brain injury by the impact from the car and asphyxia,” the bureau spokesman said.
The unidentified couple, both 25 years old, were placed in criminal detention, the China Daily said .
Police were led to the pair after construction workers found an abandoned car without license plates and cracks on the windshield, according to reports. They also found the woman buried near the vehicle.
Upon further inspection, police discovered a bloodstain in the backseat and marks on the victim, which led authorities to believe she had been struck first, Reuters said.
The case lit up social media sites in China, where users were incensed over how people could supposedly act so uncivilized.
“People of China, how have you come to this?” a commenter wrote on the Twitter-like service Weibo, accoring to Reuters.
