The Japanese government will investigate reports of PlayStation Vitas burning up, according to a report by the Daily Yomiuri newspaper (via Andriasang).

Sony said there have been 31 cases of Vitas burning up during recharging: 23 in Japan and eight in the US, the UK and Australia.

Earlier this month Sony sent information on these incidents to the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation. In all cases the connection slot between the charging unit and the Vita burned during charging.

No one has been injured.

Sony insisted the problem has nothing to do with a product malfunction and confirmed it will not issue a recall. It reckons the issue is the result of people having liquids or other objects inserted in the connection.

What?

Those who ended up with a burnt out connector will have to pay to get it fixed, Sony said.
