Dakota County: Duck hunter arrested after shots fired during quarrel

Shots were fired after a spat between duck hunters in Spring Lake Park Reserve turned ugly, the Dakota County sheriff's office said Thursday afternoon.

Sheriff's deputies were called around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, after reports of shots fired in the reserve, in Nininger Township northwest of Hastings.

According to the sheriff's office, one group of two duck hunters was placing decoys in the water near an island in Spring Lake when another group of four hunters confronted them angrily, saying the spot was taken.

The argument escalated into a profanity-laden shouting match before one of the hunters from the group of four allegedly fired a shotgun at the group of two.

The pellets struck the side of the group's boat, but no one was hurt.

Dakota County deputies, along with state troopers and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officers, searched the area in the Mississippi River backwaters and arrested a suspect around 3:45 p.m. Just one of the people in the group of four was arrested.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was taken to the Dakota County Jail and is expected to face felony assault charges.
