Even though they are great and the cream of the crop there are others who deserve to be on that list like Bronko Nagurski and people have different opinions.
Like Bo Jackson he will run your ass over and pound you all game and run past your ass -

Rodney Hampton with the Giants was one of my all time favs.... The NFL has phased this type of rb out..... its all about throws and long gains... instead of pounding defenses into submission.

Don't forget, Chiefs play the broncos twice a year, so Okoye won more of those matchups with Atwater than he lost, just ain't no gifs of it. Atwater was a beast tho.
But Sweetness was not a bruiser, bruh. He wasn't on no "run out of bounds every play" punnk ? like Marcus Allen either, but he don't belong in this thread. Walter Payton was Marshall Faulk before Marshall Faulk was Marshall Faulk.

No love for pure fullbacks out chea? They're making a comeback too. It's still a passing league, but I'm seeing more and more FB's and H-Backs popping up in college and pros lately.
My favorite FB's growing up...
(no order)
Tom Rathman... (aka most of Roger Craig and Ricky Watter's yards)
Moose (aka half of Emmitt Smith's yards)
Lorenzo Neal (aka half of Ladanian's yards.)
^^^ Barry Sanders is really one of the only 80s/90s era running backs that don't have to give half of his credit to a great fullback.

Yes Sweetness was a bruiser he just did with grace and happen to faster than everybody. But he used to bust thru the holes no problemand he went toe to toe with any LB in the League. Faulk was a great recieveing back but he couldnt get the ball handed to him 25-30 times like Walter did AP is the closest RB to Sweetness
as far as style IMO . B4 the SB shuffle all they did was hand the ball of to Payton that was the only offense -
Larry CsonkaLarry the First back to called for unnecessary roughness he was Beast.........earl Campbell right behind him.......Darryl Moose Johnston was a helluva lead blocker too.

I don't see the payton/AP comparison at all. He was much more of a finesse back than AP. That "sweetness" nickname wasn't because he was skulldraggin ? , lol.
Payton was once the all-time leader in all-purpose yards which of course includes receiving. AP is a pure back. He's more like Eric Dickerson (because of his upright running style) meets Jim Brown (because of how he trucks ? .)

Thurman Thomas as well
Sam ?

Height: 6-0 Weight: 242 lbs.
? earned the unique distinction of being the first back in NFL history to be selected to the Pro Bowl without carrying the ball at all during the regular season -

Shouts out to Sam ? . Good drop. Bills ran alot of single-back formations too. Especially when they got into their no-huddle offense. -
Can't forget Larry Centers too. Not really "a bruiser" but he was one of the best FB's in the league his whole career.

As a person who remember watching Walter played....... i have to say.
Sweetness switched his style up because of his size he was 5'10 and at 200 pounds, Walter was gracefully, fluid had vision and was strong...early in his career when he had to, Walter would lower that helmet and truck fools to get that extra yard, just watch the old highlights, but that was taking a toll on Walter, watch the old films and Walter used to carry fools like Jim Brown.
But Walter was smart he would juke them instead of trucking because of his size, Walter was a tweener, he would truck you if he wanted to.
Here's a take on Sweetness
Has there ever been a running back that combined incredible athletic ability with such a violent running style?
The answer, in case you were wondering, is no. -
