Real life Moonrise Kingdom! Boy, 13, and girl, 12, are found safe after they packed clothes and 'ran away to elope'

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

A 13-year-old boy and his 12-year-old girlfriend have been found 'safe and sound' after running away to try to elope, police said, in a story that echoes the 2012 hit film Moonrise Kingdom. Jose Armando Rojas from New Haven, Connecticut and Erica Lucero, from East Haven, were reported missing by their families on Sunday after they were last seen at their homes on Saturday. Police spokesperson Officer David Hartman said the children returned home at 3.30 p.m. on Monday.

Police said they believe the young runaways may have run away in a bid to elope, the Hartford Courant reported. They were reported missing after their parents found they had packed clothes for their getaway. State police launched a Silver Alert for the youngsters, but Hartman said police officers were not actively involved in a search because they did not believe the children were in danger.

'This was not a police investigation or a case for us,' Hartman said. 'Family didn't find them, they returned home. They were kids that packed a bag and left home and then returned.' He added that it was family members who had indicated the children could have run away to elope.

Police say no foul play is suspected and no further information is available about where the children were before they returned. The investigation is now closed. The case echoes the storyline of Wes Anderson's 2012 film, Moonrise Kingdom.

The movie, which is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, follows a 12-year-old orphan who escapes a Scout summer camp to run away with his pen pal. The children escape together with camping equipment, books and a cat, and spend several days camping as they try to reach a secluded cove, where they plan to live.
