Microsoft Confirms Next-Gen Xbox Announcement for May 21st
Event to be held at company's Redmond campus and streamed online.
by Scott Lowe APRIL 24, 2013

After weeks of rumor and speculation, Microsoft has confirmed that it will be holding an event on Tuesday, May 21st at 10am PST to unveil its next-generation Xbox, commonly referred to as Durango or Xbox 720. The event will take place at the company's Redmond, Washington campus.

61893_10151579519551023_954519514_n-610x225.jpg

In an official blog post, Microsoft says that the event will "mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV, and entertainment," and will come accompanied with a live broadcast on Xbox.com, Xbox Live, and Spike TV. Interestingly, the post goes on to say that the event will serve as only an initial "taste," but that it will save its larger lineup of games for E3.

"On that day, we’ll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19-days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we’ll continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games."

Some of y'all are getting waaaay to hype over these new systems. Y'all setting your self up for a big disappointment. It's either gonna be the same as wii U or a tad bit more powerful. Gaming technology hasn't reached the true next level yet. LOL at microsoft and sony's promo for the new systems. They need to stop that ? and tell the truth.

The only thing microsoft is gonna revile is all kinds of extra ? . Nothing to do with improving gaming.

While I don't expect to see an improvement in visuals (lets face it, our TV's max at 1080p and the current gen consoles already give that), we do expect to see other improvements like higher frame rate stability and better hardware, which would allow devs (who aren't lazy) to produce better games.

that's basically it, they should have just called these systems PS3/WII/360 "2.0". They're basically an expansion pack/sega CD etc etc lol. Usually systems double in power like 4 bit, 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit, 64, 128, and the current 256

    the bold:
They just released some new ? called "ultra HD" AKA "4K". But it's cost hella money(only for rich people) and us regular people aren't gonna see it for at least 3 or 4 more years. It's four times the high definition resolution as 1080p.

    http://hometheater.about.com/od/hometheaterglossary/g/4k-Resolution.htm
What makes 4K (Ultra HD) significant is that with the use of ever larger TV screen sizes as well as video projectors, 4K provides much more detailed and less pixel visible images than 1080p. 1080p looks great up to about 80-inches, and can still look good in larger screen screen sizes, but 4K can deliver an even better looking image for those larger screen sizes.

Also, 3D TVs and Video Projectors currently in use that employ the Passive Polarized Glasses method of viewing, resolution of the resultant 3D image is cut to 540p (960x540 pixels) for each eye, which is 1/2 1080p resolution. In comparison, the same TV displays a 2D image in 1080p resolution.

However, by employing a 4K resolution panel or screen, 3D images viewed via Passive Polarized Glasses can be displayed with 1080p (1920x1080) resolution for each eye. The additional bonus is that when viewing 2D images on the same TV, the viewer will see a full 4K

But I already said we are not going to get better visuals with the next gen ............ although we should see Crysis/Uncharted/Killzone/? of War level graphics in large open world sandbox games and games with the full environment destruction like BF3 on PC run on consoles at higher steady frame rates without problems. COD runs at 60 fps but sacrifice background destruction to compensate for that. This shouldn't be the case next gen. Unless as I said, devs stay lazy.

Of course visuals/graphics are gonna improve next gen, and the gen after that and the gen after that. It isn't just about screen resolution. Have ya'll seen some of the tech they're utilizing in these new and upgraded engines? Amazing ? and it'll only get better, too. And yeah, 4K is coming out and its expensive as ? but eventually it will become affordable to the average consumer just like all the other new ? does. Who knows when, but I'm guessing that eventually we'll have 4K gaming as well, it's only a matter of time. But even at 1080p, there's still room for improvement.

    1ST BOLD:
Yeah, that's pretty much all I care about at this point. I'm satisfied with the graphics we have now, they are not dated yet(in my opinion). This was the main problem with a lot of G.O.A.T games that came out. Perfect examples of this was GTA 4, far cry 3, assassin's creed 3, and batman AC.

    2nd bold
These 4 games were great but could have been greater. Big ass detailed maps, beautiful graphics, and not much to do/interact with them. I honestly think this wasn't because they focused on graphics more etc etc. It seems they were just being lazy. Because when the add-ons came out everybody thought for sure they were gonna use some of the map that wasn't used. But noooooo, it always ends up being the same areas we've played on before and only part of the game map is accessible SMH.

We were just talking about limits and capabilities of the tech for current systems. Screen res is apart of that too. This new tech for the new systems don't mean ? if the developers are lazy. Look what they are doing with current gen systems now. Joshuaboy just made me think of this ? . You peep that not too many games really utilized the full power of these systems? Once you play a game with all kinds of stuff packed into it you'll start to wonder why others don't. Especially with these games with a million sequels.

Next Xbox Functionality, Pricing Reportedly Outed
    by Andrew Goldfarb
    April 25, 2013

New rumors have provided additional details regarding alleged functionality in Microsoft’s next Xbox. An in-depth report from veteran tech blogger Paul Thurrott on Windows IT Pro elaborates on several topics Thurrott covered earlier this month including the next Xbox’s pricing, release date, operating system and more.

According to Thurrott, previous rumors that there will be two versions of the next Xbox are no longer accurate. He notes that Microsoft “originally planned to offer both a ‘full’ version of the next Xbox (with video game playing capabilities) and a lower-end entertainment-oriented version, code-named ‘Yuma,’ that didn't provide gaming capabilities.” However, “plans for Yuma are on hold, and no pure entertainment version of the next Xbox will appear in 2013 (or possibly ever).”

Thurrott notes that the rumored “always online” functionality of the next Xbox is correct. He notes that “the next Xbox must be Internet-connected to use. This is the source of the ‘always on’/’always online’ rumors and isn’t as Draconian as many seem to believe.”

Following up on his report earlier this month, Thurrott reiterated that “Microsoft will initially offer two pricing models for the console: a standalone version for $499 and a $299 version that requires a two-year Xbox LIVE Gold commitment at an expected price of $10 per month.” He also reports that the system “will launch in early November 2013.”

In terms of backwards compatibility, he once again noted that he believes Microsoft will “also deliver a third-generation Xbox 360 console this year that will be significantly less expensive than the current models.” The system is codenamed “Stingray” and Thurrott says “it’s not clear whether this device is required because the next Xbox isn’t backward-compatible or because Microsoft simply wants a low-cost entertainment box alternative.” As a third possibility, he also notes that since the Xbox 360 is still selling well, Microsoft may simply want a low-cost option since the system has become significantly cheaper to manufacture compared to its launch in 2005.

Building on rumors that Windows 8 could power the next Xbox, Thurrott writes that the system is “based on the ‘Core’ (base) version of Windows 8. This suggests a common apps platform or at least one that is similar to that used by Windows 8.” He also believes that Microsoft “could open up this platform to enthusiast developers” and reports that the company “will discuss the next Xbox developer platform at the Build conference in San Francisco in late June.” The Build conference is also where Microsoft is expected to unveil Windows 8.1.

Thurrott also confirmed previous rumors that the next Xbox will include a Blu-Ray optical drive.

Thurrott added that the name of the console “is a big area of speculation” and that “while I’ve heard nothing official, I’d be surprised if Microsoft didn’t just called it Xbox.” The next Xbox is commonly referred to as Durango, though previous rumors also suggested it was codenamed Loop or Kryptos and could be called Xbox 8. As for the console’s final name, we agree with Thurrott.

As Microsoft confirmed yesterday, the next Xbox will be revealed on May 21st from Redmond, WA. Thurrott referred to previous reports that indicated the reveal would come in April instead, saying “the initial reveal date was pushed back from April 24 to May 21 so that Microsoft could better position the device against the PlayStation 4, which Sony announced in late February.”

He notes that beyond the initial announcement on May 21st, Microsoft “will fully reveal details about the next Xbox, including the launch lineup of games” at its E3 press conference on June 10th. Previous rumors suggested that the launch line-up for the next Xbox includes Ryse, a new Forza, a family game and a zombie game.

Why are people acting like graphics can't be improved. They look good this generation, but it ain't like in-game graphics look like CGI yet or anything. There is still room for improvement.

The next Xbox rethinks DRM, Achievements and Xbox Live friends, our sources say
By BRIAN CRECENTE on Apr 26, 2013 at 11:38a

The next Xbox, set to be unveiled during a May 21 event on Microsoft's Redmond-based Xbox campus, will bring with it not just new hardware, but a slew of tweaks to the social aspects of Microsoft's console.
Sources tell Polygon that the current version of the next-gen console includes a next-gen approach to video sharing, anti-piracy protection, social networking and a massive expansion of the Xbox 360's popular achievement system.

The still-unnamed next Xbox will include the ability to capture video highlights of gameplay and then share them through networks like Facebook and Ustream.

Microsoft is trying to come up with a system for video sharing though all of the details are still being locked down. According to our sources, currently the next Xbox will capture your gameplay as if it were a DVR, allowing you to go back and select highlights. That function can be turned on or off, or a player can set up the console to automatically capture a recording when certain in-game events occur, like a headshot or collecting a specific achievement. Auto capturing those "magic moments" will be a feature only available on next-gen games.
Those videos can then be uploaded directly from the console to social sites, like YouTube, for sharing.
Sources tell Polygon that the next Xbox will indeed have some form of an always-on requirement. That will be both to support the suite of non-gaming entertainment applications that will be launched alongside the console, like streaming video services, but also as a possible anti-piracy tool. Currently, the console will support digital rights management and anti-piracy checks using an internet connection. Under Microsoft's current guidelines, which may still be changed, the decision of whether a game will require an internet connection to work and if that is a one-time authentication or a constant connection, will be left up to individual publishers.

The next Xbox will allow publishers to decide if their games should require an internet connection to be played.
The fact that offline gameplay, always online and one-time checks are supported, means that in the future, publishers will have much greater control over copyright protection for their games.

Another thing developers and publishers will have more control over with next-gen Xbox games is the way achievements are used and updated.

With the next Xbox, developers and publishers will be able to add more achievements to a game after launch, without the need to add DLC. This is designed specifically to allow developers to tweak player behavior, perhaps urging players to check out specific areas of a game or get past a difficult spot. Next-gen achievements can also be tied to broader events, like a weekend challenge or a communal goal, like contributing a set number of kills to the bigger goal of 10,000 kills over one weekend. Companies can also create cross-title achievements, like awarding points for finishing the first chapter in two different and unrelated games published by the same company. Some of these bigger, cross-title, communal achievements will be a requirement for all titles.
Microsoft is playing around with cross-platform achievements as well. Ideally, these achievements could be earned by playing a game on the next-gen system and then using a companion app, a website or maybe even by playing a specific game, like a prequel to a next-gen title, on the Xbox 360.

Microsoft is also looking to adjust the way Xbox Live functions to more closely align it with the way other social networks, like Twitter or Facebook, work. The next-generation Live won't have a cap on the number of friends a person can have. The way players add friends will also change. Now instead of it being a two-way friendship only, people can choose to follow one another, sort of like Twitter and Wii U.

We've reached out to Microsoft for comment on their support of always-online DRM, changes to Live and achievements and addition of video capture to the still-unannounced console and will update this story if and when they respond.

Microsoft seems to be going all in with these social aspects, but does anybody really want that? I mean being able to play games with friends and communicate is all good, but does anyone really want a system that is the gaming version of facebook?

Too bad MS never delivers on their promises. Remember when they promised Kinect would be revolutionary? They would deliver quality games for Kinect and the 360 would be the PS2 of this generation? No of that came to past. They are going to deliver everything except the core gaming experience as evident with this whole Xbox-TV thing. Good for casuals, but I will stick with the last ? gaming system PLAYSTATION.
