down syndrome is a trisomy related illness. so usually we have a pair of chromosomes for each set, so humans have 46 chromosomes in pairs so 23. a trisomy happens when one of the gametes (usually the maternal one) has an extra chromosome, so instead of two there are three, it's usually on the 21st chromosome in humans, so it's called trisomy 21
