a lack of Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan imo, but I am a bit of a fanboy of both.
Some great movies on here though, and that's just a few of the ones I recognize. -
? I think any filmmaker just like any writer needs to have a background in mythology.
Some of the illest movies people enjoy use classic story text.
That film list is decent though -
mythology and philosophy is the greatest story foundations
plus u always have to look at who ur favorites favorites were to get the same inspiration of surpass -
Shot at tarantino

Lmao at Mel Gibson making the least. Good for Spike for being unbiased tho cause you know spike has a hatred that burns hotter than the sun for Mel Gibson.
-
Im glad he didnt list some of his own.... movies are trash
-

No Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, ? Bill?
Come on, Spike. Denial isn't good. -
Impressive list. ? knows his cinema ..
However, he needs to step up his game again as a film director -
I know he was trying to be objective but where is Malcolm X, Do the Right Thing, or even Bamboozled?!?!
-
I probably only seen 5 of these films..
ye shrug -
im surprised there are so many craccers on that list
-

The correct date is 94.
I knew it wasn't THAT old
Kinda confused on District 9 and Apocalypto being listed tho.
District 9 is good sci fi tho. Way better than a lot of the recent sci fi ? that gets the nod -
It's an excellent list. Those are original auteurs of cinema. If you don't know Fellini, De Sica, Truffaut, Bunuel & Kubrick, you don't know ? about filmmaking. I'm not surprised Tarantino isn't there, since list is made of classic filmmakers, but the lack of Bergman's name is a big surprise for me.

I'm surprised he didn't include anything by Herzog, Jenoir, Lang, Leone or Howard Hawks and since he included modern films Paul Thomas Anderson, Cuaron, Aronofsky or Ang Lee as well. Still a pretty good list though. I wouldn't have repeated so many of the same directors if I made a similar list but it covers a lot of essential filmmaking. I've seen 56 of those movies he listed in my lifetime and I'm not even trying to be a filmmaker. I suppose if I ever did I'd be in pretty decent shape in terms of influences lol.

I would've added works from Bergman, tarkovksy, and bresson as well. But nonetheless a solid list overall. Some of my favorite directors are on there
