Regarding political elections like, say, presidential elections?
Most Americans simply vote for the candidate that they think will help them (and sometimes only them and at the cost of others) the most. It's all about which candidate will help me the most or promise that he will help me the most. That's apparently more important than which candidate is actually genuine and right and wants to help everybody (which is how I vote). Americans are terrrrrible voters. Half of them don't even really know what they're voting for. Many others don't even vote.
