Great question, I've thought about this time to time, as capitalism here in America is not working out too great for most of us. Most Americans think we're on the wrong track and the cost of living is getting more and more ridiculous year by year. Communism is too strong a direction for America to go in my opinion, too many rich people here won't give up what they've earned. However, I do think socialism should be incorporated more in American society.
Cheaper or more free housing along with healthcare would do wonders for American society. Things as they are now here is not satisfying the avg American so some kind of effective change is desperately needed. -

The sheer mass and size not to mention history of places like Russia and China are the reason no government could work. They didn't approach socialism/communism as a means to exist, its purely circumstantial in their case, not ideological.
Its a different situation when you are newly independent and attempting to rebuild a country's infrastructure. -
