I went for Chaka, because I just love that woman.
Can't believe Aretha hasn't got a vote yet.
Chaka is my personal choice, but Aretha is surely G.O.A.T.

Mariah's voice is not the same any more. Well the best and favorite are two different things so I'll have to go with Whitney being the best vocalist from an overall standpoint.

You're tone deaf. She hasn't been the same for years. She's not terrible but no where near her prime.

    this thread is all wrong

you prolly need to do it over again

you'll end up arguing apples and oranges

    1. are we going by strictly vocals or career achievement? you cant mix both because that automatically eliminates the old school artists such as aretha etc. not to mention some of the old school artists that can be named have had both group and solo careers which could take away from their overall achievements.
    2. rnb and soul singing is two different things really. soul singing doesnt always require a polished voice. see james brown.
    3. ERA'S ...this goes back to achievements or strictly vocals. its stupid to compare someone like beyonce to the legends who came before her. ppl like chakka chan, gladys knight, etc paved the way for the mariah's and whitney's. back then youre talking about a whole different climate, alot of these ladies from back day were just good singers in churches and whatnot. they had to be convinced to pursue a professional career in music. whereas ppl like beyonce have been putting all their time and efforts into becoming a professional before they even know if they will be accepted or successful. so you have them writing songs, dancing around, singing, and literally manufacturing a persona to fit the bill.

its like comparing mayweather to the boxers of old. the old school boxers were more of a natural homegrown talent. mayweather comes in at a time where the sport is down to a science and has sports medicine advancements and what not LOL its literally two different worlds.

It's a tough one. I can't really say who's the best, there are so many greats. From the list I'll say Sade. Mariah pushed her though.

    Let's not forget Gladys Knight.

Also, special mention for Caron Wheeler from Soul II Soul. I have always loved her voice, and thought she should have had a much bigger career. I don't know what went wrong. Beautiful soulful voice.
