Accuser's lawyer seeks review of Florida State QB Jameis Winston's ? case

A lawyer for the woman who said she was ? by Florida State University’s star quarterback called on the state’s attorney general for an independant review of what she called a botched investigation.

The attorney, Patricia Carroll, told reporters that she is asking the attorney general to examine how the Tallahassee Police Department handled the ? allegations against Heisman Trophy hopeful Jameis Winston.

“This was an investigation into a ? victim, not an investigation into a ? suspect,” Carroll said.

She said that detectives assigned to the case refused to interview key witnesses and that DNA evidence collected was unreliable and incomplete.

Carroll added that she questioned the legitimacy of the investigation as soon as the alleged ? was reported almost a month after its Dec. 7, 2012, date.

“We didn’t feel we were going to get a proper investigation,” she said. “We didn’t feel we were going to get justice.”

The lead detective got a search warrant for the accuser’s cellphone records and social media accounts within the first few days of the investigation, Carroll said.

But she said investigators refused to gather the same information from Winston and his two friends who were with him at the time of the alleged sex assault, Carroll said.

“All they did was continue to investigate the victim.”

The attorney listed other issues, including what she called erroneous medical and police reports, that she considered proof the case had been mishandled.

Carroll said she wasn’t accusing police of falsifying the paperwork, but said it was worth an investigation.

“I just identified this issue this week, but it’s a very significant issue,” she said.

Carroll’s comments come a week after Leon County State Attorney Willie Meggs announced his office dropped the case because there was not enough evidence to convict Winston.

The 19-year-old quarterback led the No. 1-ranked Seminoles to a 45-7 win over the Duke Blue Devils in the ACC Championship game last weekend.
