Darren Sharper ? investigation report to be released Friday by NOPD

A week after former Saints safety Darren Sharper was arrested in Los Angeles on ? charges, New Orleans police are set to release a report on Friday that should reveal new details about accusations of sexual assault he faces locally.

New Orleans police have said a complaint was made against Sharper on Sept. 24, but few details have been made public about the claims against him. Sharper, an NFL Network analyst who was a key player in the Saints' 2009 Super Bowl-winning season, has not been arrested or charged in New Orleans.

News that Sharper was under investigation in New Orleans came after he was booked into a Los Angeles jail on Jan. 17, following two ? reports there, one in October and another earlier this month.
NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune made a formal request for the report on Saturday (Jan. 18). The NOPD says on its website initial reports are available within 20 business days of the incident, but the report made nearly four months ago had not yet been released by late Thursday.

NOPD spokeswoman Remi Braden said the delay was because "reports involving sexual assault allegations contain extremely sensitive information."

"The City Attorney's Office and the NOPD take such investigations very seriously and protect the identity of the person who filed the complaint. Following the public records request received, we consulted with the City Attorney as per policy, and the incident report will be released," Braden said.NOPD turned over the case to prosecutors for a "consultation" last year, said Christopher Bowman, a spokesman for Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro. Bowman confirmed Thursday the case remains under investigation.

It's unclear if Sharper, 38, has hired a lawyer. His agent has talked to several local attorneys, but those contacted this week said they could not confirm if they had been retained.
Immediately after Sharper's arrest in California, the NFL Network said he was suspended from his job, where he has been an in-studio analyst since 2012.

A woman told an NOPD detective she met former Saints star safety Darren Sharper at a bar then he took her back to his apartment in the Central Business District where he ? her, according to a police report released Friday.

The woman told police she went to a "couple" of bars, where she consumed a "large amount of alcohol" on Sunday, Sept. 23. She said she met Sharper at one of the bars and he took her back to his apartment at 701 Tchoupitoulas St around 10 a.m., according to the report.

There, he had sex with her without her consent, she told police. "The victim stated she did not consent to any sexual behavior," the report says.

She called the police and gave her statement to Special Victims Unit Detective Derrick Williams on Sept. 24 at 10 a.m., the report says.

Sharper, an NFL Network commentator who played a significant role in the Saints' 2009 Super Bowl-winning season, has not been arrested or charged in New Orleans.

The report's release came a week after Sharper, 38, was booked into the Los Angeles County Jail in connection with two separate sexual assaults, one in October and another this month. He was freed on $200,000 bond later that day (Jan. 17) and is due back in court there on Feb. 14.

Christopher Bowman, a spokesman for Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro said Thursday the case remains under investigation. He has said that the NOPD referred the investigation to Cannizzaro's office for review without booking Sharper.

Sharper's agent has interviewed with several local attorneys, but none have confirmed that they are representing him.

The NFL Network said on Saturday that Sharper was suspended from his job, where he has worked as an in-studio analyst since 2012.

Darren Sharper attorney: No evidence in ? case against former Saints star, woman followed Sharper 'willingly'

An attorney for Darren Sharper said Friday the woman accusing the former Saints player of ? followed him "willingly" after a night of drinking at a New Orleans bar and there is no evidence that a sexual assault occurred.

Nandi Campbell, a New Orleans criminal defense attorney, released a statement saying the lack of evidence is underscored by the fact that police have not arrested Sharper and prosecutors have not charged him with a crime, despite the report being made on Sept. 24. The New Orleans Police Department and District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro have issued statements through spokespeople saying the investigation is ongoing.

Campbell's statement came after the NOPD earlier in the day released a police report revealing new details of the allegations against Sharper. The woman told police she had been drinking on the night of Sept. 22 and met Sharper at a bar before he took her to his apartment in the Central Business District. "The victim stated she did not consent to any sexual encounter," an officer wrote in a report.

"She later claimed to have a vague recollection of the night and morning events," Campbell said in the statement. "Of course vague recollection is often times consistent with consuming large amounts of alcohol."

Campbell said there were "numerous witnesses" who saw the woman on her own and also saw her with Sharper. Some of the witnesses said Sharper was "mingling" with other bar-goers and the accuser was following Sharper "willingly." Campbell said the pair was drinking with two or three other people at a bar in the French Quarter and another bar in the CBD, and the woman left voluntarily with Sharper at the end of the night.

The attorney added that "various" surveillance footage shows the woman's "actions and behaviors on the date in question." That surveillance video was handed over to NOPD.

"No evidence suggests or implies that a sexual assault occurred," Campbell said. "The totality of the witnesses' statements and the physical evidence support the police department and district attorney's decision not to file criminal charges at this time."

Sharper also is accused of ? in Los Angeles, prompting his arrest on Jan. 17. Los Angeles police said he was accused of sexual assaults in October and earlier this month.

    Darren Sharper charged with ?

LOS ANGELES -- Former NFL safety Darren Sharper has been charged in Los Angeles with drugging and ? two women, prosecutors said Friday.

Sharper was expected to be arraigned on two counts of ? by use of drugs, four counts of furnishing a controlled substance and one count of possession of a controlled substance, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

The complaint alleges the controlled substances were morphine and zolpidem, which is sold under the brand name Ambien.

A call from The Associated Press seeking comment from Nandi Campbell, an attorney for Sharper, was not immediately returned.

A call from The Associated Press seeking comment from Nandi Campbell, an attorney for Sharper, was not immediately returned.

Sharper, 38, played in the NFL from 1997 to 2010, mostly with the Packers.

Prosecutors said he met two women at a West Hollywood nightclub on Oct. 30, invited them to a party and stopped at his hotel room. He is accused of giving a shot of alcohol to each of the women before they passed out.

One woman told investigators she woke up naked hours later with Sharper sexually assaulting her. The other woman awoke and "interrupted his actions," according to the criminal complaint.

On Jan. 14, Sharper met two other women at the same nightclub and invited them to a party. On the way, he invited both to his room and offered them shots before they passed out, prosecutors said.

When they woke up early the next day, one woman believed she had been sexually assaulted, the complaint said. Both women left the hotel and sought medical treatment.

Sharper was arrested on Jan. 17 and released on $200,000 bail. Prosecutors want his bail raised to $10 million because the Miami resident faces similar investigations in Arizona, Nevada and Louisiana. If convicted in the California case, he could face more than 30 years in prison.

Sharper was selected All-Pro six times and chosen for the Pro Bowl five times. He played in two Super Bowls, one with the Packers as a rookie and a second with the Saints.

Got damn.. The ? got cases in Cali & Louisiana.. plus cases Nevada & AZ.. Smh...

Ex-NFL star Darren Sharper accused of sex assault: 7 women, 4 states

At least seven women in four different states have accused former NFL football player Darren Sharper of drugging and sexually assaulting them, according to court documents filed in Los Angeles on Friday.

At least three other women and one man reported being drugged, according to records. Three of the alleged sexual assaults occurred on two consecutive nights in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Los Angeles County prosecutors charged Sharper on Friday with two counts of ? and five other drug charges in connection with two incidents in October and January. He has not been charged in cases in Las Vegas, New Orleans and Tempe, Ariz.

Sharper, 38, made a brief court appearance Friday morning, but did not enter a plea as his arraignment was pushed to Feb. 20. He was ordered to surrender his passport, to stay in Los Angeles and to avoid the West Hollywood club Bootsy Bellows.
He remained free on $200,000 bail.

“We look forward to the true facts being revealed in this case and we are hopeful that Mr. Sharper will be fully exonerated before this case is concluded,” Blair Berk, one of Sharper's attorneys, said outside the courtroom on Friday.

Court documents allege a disturbing pattern in the incidents, which occurred between Sept. 22 and Jan. 15.

Victims reported meeting the five-time Pro Bowl player -- usually at a nightclub -- then going back to his hotel room or home.

Sharper allegedly offered the women shots to drink, after which they reported immediately blacking out. Many of the women woke up with little or no memory of what happened after the drinks, but felt as though they had been sexually assaulted.

The first case mentioned in court documents occurred Sept. 22, when the alleged victim met Sharper at an event for the New Orleans Saints.

New Orleans police said the woman reported drinking a beverage provided by Sharper.

Her next memory was several hours later, waking up "to Defendant Sharper on top of her sexually assaulting her." She was examined at a hospital the next day and Sharper's DNA was found, court records said.

Sharper's attorney in New Orleans, Nandi F. Campbell, said police and the district attorney's office declined to file charges in the case because of a lack of evidence.

"No evidence suggests or implies that a sexual assault occurred," Campbell said in a news release.

[Updated at 5:15 p.m. PST, Feb. 14: A spokesman for the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office said the investigation into Sharper remains open and is ongoing.]

On Oct. 30, Sharper allegedly met two women at the Bootsy Bellows nightclub in West Hollywood. As the club was closing, Sharper invited the women to an afterparty but said he needed to stop at his hotel to "pick up something," according to court documents.

The girls told authorities that Sharper gave them what he described as a shot of "coffee Petron."

"Within minutes of consuming the beverage, both girls reported to have, 'blacked out,'" according to the court declaration of L.A. police Det. John Macchiarella.

Several hours later, one of the women woke up naked while Sharper was assaulting her, Macchiarella said. The other woman, walked into the room, "interrupting his actions."

The women told authorities they immediately left the hotel, and went home to sleep.

About a month later, on Nov. 20, Sharper allegedly went to a nightclub in Scottsdale, Ariz., with two women. After drinking, one of the women, identified as Jane Doe D, "began acting strangely," prompting her friends to take her home, court documents said.

At her apartment, Sharper gave the other woman and their roommate shots of alcohol, according to court records.

One woman told police she immediately blacked out. The other, identified as Jane Doe F, said she felt "strange and disoriented" and went to her room to lie down. Later, on her way to the bathroom, she told police she saw Sharper on top of one of her roommates "with his buttocks exposed moving in a thrusting motion."

The next morning, Jane Doe D woke up and found herself naked from the waist down. "She had no memory of the night's events or how her clothing was removed," according to Macchiarella's court declaration.

All three women sought medical treatment. Authorities tested one of the cups Sharper had given the women and found traces of the drug zolpidem, or Ambien, court records show.

The women reported the alleged assaults to Tempe police.

"At this time, the investigation is still ongoing and our detectives are working closely with the Maricopa County attorney's office in this investigation," Tempe police Sgt. Michael Pooley said.

On Jan. 14, Sharper returned to Bootsy Bellows in West Hollywood, where he allegedly met two women and invited them to an afterparty as the club was closing.

They stayed at the party until 4 a.m. and then Sharper invited them to a second party. While en route, he said he wanted to stop at his hotel "to pick up some narcotics," according to court records.

When the girls entered his hotel suite, he gave them shots to drink. Minutes later, the girls reported that they "blacked out." A few hours later, they woke up on a pullout sofa.

One woman "immediately felt as though she had been sexually assaulted," according to court records. The girls left the hotel immediately and went home to sleep. Later that evening, both women sought medical treatment.

The women told police they couldn't remember anything between the time the time they drank the shots and woke up in the hotel.

Later that day, Sharper went to Las Vegas, according to court documents.

He met two women and a man at a nightclub and invited them back to his hotel room. Once again, court documents allege Sharper gave the three shots to drink; all reported immediately blacking out.

One of the women told police she woke up next to Sharper in his bed. When she got up to use the restroom, she saw "visible injuries to her face which she could not account for," according to records.

She went back to bed and fell asleep. When she woke up, Sharper asked her how she was feeling, claiming that she had vomited the night before.

"Defendant Sharper then provided her with an unknown beverage that he claimed would help her feel better. Jane Doe B took a few sips of the beverage. The next thing she remembered was Defendant Sharper sexually assaulting her," the court records read.

The other woman said she woke up alone on the couch and "immediately felt as though she had been sexually assaulted."

The man who was with them said he had no memories after drinking the shot. He told authorities the next thing he remembered was sitting alone at the hotel bar.

Both women sought medical treatment later that day.

Las Vegas Police Officer Jose Hernandez said the investigation is active and ongoing and will be submitted to the district attorney's office.

Court documents described Sharper as a Miami Beach, Fla., resident, but said he had been living at a Los Angeles hotel at the time of the alleged offenses.
