Total spending on video gaming in the US added up to $4.6 billion USD in the first quarter (Q1) of 2014, according to a report from the NPD Group's Games Market Dynamics.

Hardware sales were the strongest facet of gaming, with total sales accounting for almost a quarter of all spending. Driven by sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, hardware spending increased 47% to $983 million USD in Q1. Despite this sizable increase, total spending on video gaming was down 1% from the same period in 2013.

In regards to hardware sales, analyst Liam Callahan expects they will continue their strong pace throughout the year.

pending on accessories fell 11% to $446 million USD, with "gamepads and interactive gaming toys being the two bright spots for the category," according to NPD.

Spending on new physical-format media fell 27%, to $372 million USD, which drove overall content sales down 8% in Q1. However, spending for digital formats rose 4% year-over-year.

Callahan said that content spending "increased for used games, digital full games, DLC, and mobile," and subscription revenue saw a "modest increase." He pointed to this as "another example of the interplay of physical media as well as digital downloads as consumers transition further into this console generation.”
