I'm listening to some old Prince and I never noticed how simpish some of his stuff was. Or maybe I did but I didn't have the proper context to place it in.

I would post the actual songs but you know how that goes. Some lyrics excerpts:

"Gotta stop messing about"(1981):

"Sittin' outside your door, about to break down
Fourth time this week, somebody's come around
Who's it gonna be tonight? Who's the lucky man?
Where you get the attitude, I'll never understand"

"When you were mine"(1980):

"It was just like a dream
You let all my friends come over and meet
And you were so strange
You didnt have the decency to change the sheets (did I hear that right or did Prince just let the homies run a train on his girl?)
...
I never cared
I never was the kind to make a fuss
When he was there
Sleeping in between the two of us(!)"

I mean some of this ? makes Drake sound like Iceberg Slim. So why does Prince get a pass? His talent/catalog? Or does he get a pass at all?

Thoughts?
