HOW UNITY IS INSPIRED BY THE ORIGINAL ASSASSIN’S CREED

Ubisoft's going back to the series' roots in the way assassinations play out.

While our pair of recent previews have highlighted how Assassin’s Creed Unity is evolving the series, Ubisoft’s Parisian simulator is also going back to the series’ roots in some really interesting ways.

Creative Director Alex Amancio, who also helmed 2011’s AC: Revelations, explained to IGN how Unity is inspired by the original Assassin’s Creed. “The first Assassin's Creed was designed to provide a tremendous level of exposition for each Assassination target. This gave players the opportunity to get to know the mark and witness their crimes before the actual deed.”

While that was where the series came from, it hasn’t always been like that. “We have since strayed from this concept and as a result, targets have become much more forgettable. ACU goes back to the idea of trying to make each and every assassination target an iconic character.”

Amancio went on to lay out just how Unity goes back to the series’ roots, explaining, “In order to achieve this, we began by crafting each assassination target around a strong character archetype. We then crafted the context and theme of the entire sequence that features each of these characters around their chosen archetype. Finally, we conclude each sequence with an ambitious blackbox assassination.”

Blackbox assassinations are missions that are open enough to allow players to truly express themselves through their actions. For example, your target may be giving a speech inside of a crowded church. In order to gain entrance, you can find a guard who has a key, spelunk through the catacombs and come up from underneath it, find an open window and climb your way down, or barge straight through the front door.

We’ll have much more on Assassin’s Creed Unity leading up to its November 11 launch.
