Scarlett Johansson has been offered $10m to star in the long-gestating live action remake of Ghost in the Shell, reports Deadline. The top-dollar pay cheque recognises the US actor’s newfound status as an A-list action star following standout turns in Lucy and Marvel Studio’s Avengers series of superhero films.
Hollywood’s plan for a debut English-language take on the seminal 1995 Mamoru Oshii anime moved a step closer to reality in January when Snow White and the Huntsman’s Rupert Sanders was hired to direct by studio Dreamworks. Reports back then suggested the remake would be based on a new screenplay by The Reluctant Fundamentalist’s William Wheeler.
The Ghost in the Shell comic book series, film rights to which were picked up by Dreamworks co-owner Steven Spielberg in 2009, follows cyborg detective Major Motoko Kusanagi, team leader of a futuristic Japanese counterterrorism organisation focused on cyber-crime. Three anime films (one made-for-TV) have been based on the comic, of which the 1995 Ghost in the Shell was the first, as well as an animated Japanese TV series and three video games. Spielberg’s planned 3D movie failed to make it to the production stage but the approach for Johansson suggests the new iteration may have legs.
In related news, Deadline also reports that Will Smith, Tom Hardy and The Wolf of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie are in line to star in comic-book epic Suicide Squad for studio Warner Bros. Robbie’s interest may have encouraged Dreamworks to approach Johansson for Ghost in the Shell, as the Australian actor was said to be an early frontrunner to star in the anime adaptation.
Suicide Squad, about a team of supervillains recruited to take on near-impossible black-ops missions in return for the commutation of their sentences, is on Warner’s newly announced slate of 10 movies set in the DC Comics universe. It is due to follow Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice into cinemas some time in 2016.

I might try to re-watch some GITS stuff this weekend. It's been a while. Might see some things differently now that I'm older.
But I really don't care about this new one they talking bout making. If it looks good, I'll check it out. If not, I really wouldn't give a damn.
Hollywood is looking scrapped for fresh ideas these days, though. -
Be grateful Keanu isn't playing Spike Spiegel.

Ghost in the Shell is one of the few anime I think Hollywood could do a good job with, if they actually got the right director and actors. I guess ScaJo wouldn't be such a bad way to go. I would have picked the chick from Underworld.

I only clicked because it said "Scarlet Johansen + Casting Couch"

I can definitely seeing her playing th3 Major. Don't have much faith about anything other than that though

ghost in the shell is one of the most intelligent anime ever and a future like it is actually possible. I really hope Hollywood does not ? this up
-
They're gonna ? it up.

She could be a decent Major. Still ? poor casting and I have no hope for this remake which is a shame as I absolutely love the original film and SAC.

Typical Hollywood whitewashing. -
Japanese people lost
-
Who should, ideally, portray Motoko?
-

Somebody need to breed that. -

It'll go further if they do a remake that's loosely based on it. That way they dont have to worry about the pressure of it living up to the anime & appeasing fans, they can take a difft turn w/ the movie doing it like that.
btw Scarlett Johansson is the perfect actress for such a role. All depends on the director & producers tho.....
If Spielberg gets the rights he won't ? it up that movie will be dope af.
I thought Spielberg had the rights ages ago, and besides, having Spielberg on as producer or whatever doesn't guarantee a good film, case and point the Transformers series. They've got that muppet Rupert Sanders in the directors seat - the same ? who gave us Snow White and The Huntsman and happily destroyed his marriage with Liberty Ross by getting caught flinging it up that miserable drip named Kristen Stewart, so already his film making skills and all round judgment is under immense question before the cameras have started rolling. So many better young directors could have tackled this. -
Maggie Q seemed like the most lazy and obvious choice to me.

Rofl the guy that made that ? snow white movie is making this?
-
I wonder when Asian countries do knockoffs of American movies, do they ? about Asians being cast?

Why you even ask that question? They will probably whitewash the whole cast not just Matoko and the setting will most definitely not be Japan even the the Japanese identity is pretty central to the whole storyline.
