CLE Police Union demands apology from Browns for Andrew Hawkins shirt supporting Tamir Rice

CLEVELAND - Cleveland Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins made a bold statement while taking the field on Sunday, and the head of the Cleveland Police Union is demanding an apology.

While running out of the tunnel at FirstEnergy Stadium, Hawkins wore a shirt that read, “Justice for Tamir Rice - John Crawford.”

In response, Jeff Follmer Police Patrolman Union President sent newsnet5 the following statement:

It's pretty pathetic when athletes think they know the law. They should stick to what they know best on the field. The Cleveland Police protect and serve the Browns stadium and the Browns organization owes us an apology.

Browns cornerback Johnson Bademosi wore a shirt that read, “I Can’t Breathe” last Sunday while warming up before playing the Indianapolis Colts in protest of a grand jury's decision not to indict the officer involved in the death of Eric Garner.

Bademosi was joined by other famous athletes wearing the shirt during warm-ups including LeBron James, Kyrie Irving , Reggie Bush and Derrick Rose.

During Ferguson protests, St. Louis Rams players exited the tunnel at the Edward Jones Dome with their hands up , a symbolic sign for “hands up, don’t shoot.”

Browns players protest with ‘Justice for Tamir Rice, John Crawford’ T-shirt

On Sunday, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins added his name to the list of pro athletes who have protested recent killings.

Hawkins came out for pregame warmups wearing a T-shirt that read: “Justice for Tamir Rice and John Crawford.” He was joined by another, as yet unidentified player.

Rice, a 12-year-old, was holding a toy gun when he was shot and killed by a Cleveland police officer last month. Crawford was shot and killed by police in August while holding an air gun in a Wal-Mart. Both were black.

How dare black folks use their First Amendment rights to support innocent black people killed by the pigs.. apparently those rights are still only for whitey's use only...

Cleveland Police hire an mentally unstable, previously fired police officer who now rolls up on a 12 year old and shoots him in under 3 seconds.

and their response is: "It's pretty pathetic when athletes think they know the law. They should stick to what they know best on the field. The Cleveland Police protect and serve the Browns stadium and the Browns organization owes us an apology."

Cleveland Law: Never be a black kid with a toy gun. If police get called to investigate you, it's going to be with bullets.

The public figures making statements like Hawkins will have as much empathy/compassion for the law enforcers that these union reps protect as the law enforcers have for the families they've given losses to.

It's pretty pathetic when you've worked with the law for years and still don't know that it's subjective

They operate as a gang. The police union works hard to.cover and proter cops when they have legal troubles. To them this is a war between them and citizens. They are the boggest gangs in our cities.

The Browns in a statement said they respect Cleveland police and their players right to support certain causes.

"We have great respect for the Cleveland Police Department and the work that they do to protect and serve our city," the statement says. "We also respect our players' rights to project their support and bring awareness to issues that are important to them if done so in a responsible manner."

Rice, 12, was fatally shot on Nov. 22 by rookie Cleveland police officer Timothy Loehmann less than two seconds after he arrived to investigate a complaint about Tamir carrying what turned out to be a fake gun.

Crawford, 22, was fatally shot by police on Aug. 5 while holding a toy rifle inside a Walmart in Beavercreek, outside Dayton.

Follmer said many Cleveland police officers work security for the Browns games and are employed by Browns.

"He should stick to playing football and let us worry about law enforcement," Follmer said. "The players don't know what our job entails. Don't judge us by what you're reading in the media."
