Universal said today it kicked off principal photography on Steve Jobs, the long-in-beta biopic that is now set to go with Danny Boyle directing Aaron Sorkin’s script. The already locked cast includes Michael Fassbender as Jobs, Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak, Kate Winslet as former Macintosh marketing boss Joanna Hoffman, Jeff Daniels as former Apple CEO John Sculley, Katherine Waterston as Jobs’ ex-girlfriend Chrisann Brennan and Michael Stuhlbarg as one of the Mac’s original developers Andy Hertzfeld, and Perla Haney-Jardine (Future Weather).

Ripley Sobo (Winter’s Tale), Makenzie Moss (Do You Believe?), Sarah Snook and Adam Shapiro round out the cast.

Based on the Walter Isaacson biography of Jobs, the pic is being produced by Mark Gordon, Guymon Casady, Scott Rudin and Christian Colson. In November, the pic moved from Sony to Universal where it got a fast green light. Sony put the project in turnaround even though it had been on a fast track there as the filmmakers worked to lock down an actor to play Jobs, after a play for Christian Bale fell through.

Universal said shooting is underway today in San Francisco but Berkeley was buzzing on Friday as the production took over La Méditerranée restaurant on College Avenue. Period cars from the early ’80s were parked along the street and onlookers saw most of the major cast.
