What in the entire ? .

Clearly we have different definitions of soulful. Soulful = 'damn im zonin the ? out. Are these tears on my face'

    Like...Allure.

Like i said before, 97% of Timbo's beats are uptempo 'heeeey, hooo', 'happy beats, with the flutes n zylophones.' Ngga i dont wanna party all damn day give me SOUL. Timbo aint got that

    LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

You actually pointed out the major flaw in Timbo's discography (especially his rap joints). As much sound as he has access to, there isn't much depth in emotion to his beats. A rapper especially feeds off the emotion in a beat and can create something out of that. Tim and P both produced for Jay... but ? the beats for a second, NO song Timbo produced for Jay lyrically is seeing Allure for that reason alone.

Timbo made Magoo tolerable with his beats..... Timbo made bubba tolerable with his beats... Timbo made Ms Jade tolerable with his beats....Timbo made Tweet tolerable with his beats.....Im sorry but any producer that can make those ppl tolerable gets my vote easy

What kind of low ass bar is this?? Lmao

Man i need to find the vid/interview when Jay z is talking about Magna Carta. They asked why he dont work with Just he said something to the effect of their records are huge moments and take time to craft, cant be rushed, etc. Whereas he just go in w/ Timbo and can crank out a lil feel good record for the masses, like its some microwave ? hahaha Im paraphrasing but he said it. Timbo's production has no depth

And the pharrell has depth with his production???? Gtfoh!!!! Yea there's real depth with the track "Happy" smfh

Happy is a pop song, a credit to Pharrell's diversity of sound. He can make pop records, still do hip-hop and even make rock joints.

I'm going with Pharell he has more soul in his music and using more instruments in his production compared to timbaland . I don't feel timbaland has crafted anything as soulful as "Nightmares".

    Timbaland has better percussion
More unique samples and drum sequencing

    And his samples are monstrous

The cop car sample in Pony (I thought it was a mario jump sample, someone in the reason corrected me) and the breathes
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68IFfpJNLUs

The tabla sounding percussion in Ugly by Bubba Sparx
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Trd49Da0gf0

The percussion in between the snares in The Potion is bananas
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-Bxh-nNc9A

The Neptunes bling bling sounds can't ? with timbo's drum sequencing

The beats in that post do the Neptunes more justice than the opening post's beats. Those are the smooth ass chords I'm talking about.

both have mad hits and made classics goin back into the 90s.. to me tho, timbo's jams hold up better over time.. a lot of the neptunes songs i liked back in the day sound cheezy as hell when i go back n listen to them. i'll take the timbo bounce over that neptunes sound

In my experience, the neptunes have dropped more "WTF is that" beats than Timbo. I've been blown away by more beats from the neps, simple as that. They have a distinct sound, but they flip it so many ways. Popular demand, and Feds Watchin don't sound the same but you know who did both off top. Then the ? hit you wit ? like allure that's just, man. Tim nice on the R&B side, that's where his strength lies, he has some classic hip hop beats, but the aaliyah's, genuine's, and justin timberlake's of the world do best with his production. It is my firm belief that he ? up that Jay-z album, even that Holy Grail beat sounded more suited for justin timberlake than hov. That's a whole nother thread though. Bottom line, Tim can't ? wit P.

even for arguments sake this is a pretty stupid point to make because simply within hip hop tim has never been that dude.....he use's singers to channel the soul over his beats (moreso in rnb) rather than a direct sample, to base his merit of diversity on this logic when you have the pete rocks, rzas & preemos of this world out there isn't right because his production methods have never been like that....he's never been one to use a soul sample in the traditional sense that 90% of other producers would.

thats not to say he doesn't know how to use a soul sample effectively though, people don't realise (especially early on in his career) how ingenious he was with his sampling, 'Supa dupa fly' is one of the most copied albums of the noughties (in a production sense) for a certain reason, and he was using soul samples all over the joint (whether it be the delfonics or ann peebles a good 3 years before hi-tek decided to have a shot at the same sample himself) on that waaaay before anyone else was doing it in a manner like he was.as a superfan i'll straight up say he can't make a soulful hip hop beat for ? (but then i don't look to him for those and by now neither should anyone else) but for anybody to claim the guy doesn't know how to use a soul sample properely is baloney, he's always been one of the best at hiding and layering his sam ples to the point that you don't even know he uses him.

i was knocked for six when i heard 'heaven' on magna carta, first time in almost 20 years of listening to the guy he used a soul sample straight up.

i've said it before and i'll say it again, tim's body of work within hip hop will never merit him a place on the 'legends' list because he's never had that moment where he's been able to shake the hip hop world on its head, Neptunes had that with 'lord willin' which is why they rightly deserve to be held in higher in esteem.'deliverance' may be a very well produced record but bubba sparxxx is hardly an elite emcee.

but tim is arguably the most creative and influential producer of the late 90's, he's single handedly reinvented rnb like 2 or 3 times lol, that more mini epochs in popular music than anyone this side of james brown, and you wont find many producers post 'supa dupa fly' who haven't bitten from him at least once.

I love this beat, I almost posted it. One thing about Neptunes is that their beats are so distinct but never over-produced. Bet it took like 15 mins to make this beat.

Is it safe to say that Neptunes/Pharrell take more risks than Timbo?
