Here’s what happened when black men in America were asked to respond to the word ‘police’
This video of a ‘word association’ game shows what happens when black men in America are asked to give their immediate responses to one word – police.
In the video, 45 black American men from ages 5 to 50 are asked to respond, with a clear generational divide appearing in the answers.
It starts with a series of youngsters giving largely positive responses, as they use words such as ‘helpful’, ‘brave’ and ‘superheroes’ to describe America’s law enforcement.
But as the video shifts to the answers of the older generation, the police are damningly described as ‘conceited’, ‘corrupt’, and ‘scary’.
Others seem to express a fear of the police, with responses such as ‘stay away from them’, ‘evil’, and ‘hands up’.
The video comes less than a year after the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown at the hands of police officers in New York and Missouri respectively.
In a similar video, the same men were asked to give their immediate responses to the word ‘Ferguson’.
