South Africans killing other African Immigrants!

(CNN)— Shops looted and set ablaze. Terrified foreigners hiding in police stations and stadiums.Machete-wielding attackers hacking immigrants to death in major cities in South Africa.

As attacks against foreigners and their
businesses rage on, killing at least six people
this week, other nations in the continent are
scrambling to evacuate their citizens from South
Africa. But this is not the first time xenophobic
violence has exploded in a country that tries to
portray itself as a diverse "rainbow" nation.

What triggered this week's attacks?

They started after Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini
said at a recent gathering that foreigners "should
pack their bags and go" because they are taking
jobs from citizens, local media reported.

Shortly after his comments, violence against
immigrants erupted in the port city of Durban.
His office has denied he made the comments ,
saying journalists misquoted him. While kings
are mostly ceremonial figures in the nation, they
are influential in their communities.

But the United Nations said the attacks started
in March after a labor dispute between citizens
and foreign workers.

Why are immigrants targeted?

Some citizens have accused African immigrants
of taking their already scarce jobs, undermining
businesses owned by locals and contributing to
a high crime rate. The nation's unemployment
rate is about 25%, according to government
figures.

But resentment over porous borders, growing
crime rates, poverty and corruption are also a
major concern, analysts say.

President Jacob Zuma has said his government
is addressing the social and economic concerns.
But he said immigrants contribute to the
nation's economy and bring skills that are in
demand, and should not be stereotyped as
criminals.

"While some foreign nationals have been arrested
for various crimes, it is misleading and wrong to
label or regard all foreign nationals as being
involved in crime in the country," Zuma said.

How many immigrants are in South Africa?

The nation has about 2 million documented and
undocumented immigrants , which is about 4% of
the total population, according to a study by the
University of the Witwatersrand.

Zimbabweans make up the largest group of
immigrants.

Also, South Africa is a top travel destination for
wealthy Africans because of its proximity and
developed infrastructure.

Has South Africa had xenophobic attacks
before?

Yes. This is the latest in a series of attacks that
date back years.

In January, looters burned businesses owned by
foreigners in another wave of xenophobic
attacks. In addition, there were other incidents of
violence last year, Human Rights Watch said.

Seven years ago, Johannesburg was the
epicenter of more anti-immigrant tensions that
left dozens dead in attacks that later spread to
Cape Town. Most of the victims were
Zimbabweans who had fled repression and dire
economic circumstances. In those attacks, police
arrested more than 200 people on various
charges, including ? , murder, robbery and
theft.

In 2006, xenophobic violence broke out again for
several months in Cape Town.

What are other African nations doing about it?

Victims of xenophobic attacks have been from
various African nations, including Nigeria,
Somalia and Ethiopia.

African nations have condemned the attacks.
Kenya, Malawi and Zimbabwe are just a few of
the countries evacuating their citizens from
South Africa.

In Zambia, local radio station QFM said it will
not play South African music in solidarity with
the victims.

And in Mozambique, South African energy and
chemical giant Sasol sent about 340 South
African nationals home. The company said
Mozambican employees voiced concern about
reported violence against their nationals and
protested the presence of South African
employees in Mozambique.

Is inequality a contributing factor?

Most of the attacks have erupted in poor and
marginalized areas.

Despite the progress the nation has made since
its apartheid days, inequality still remains a
major concern , according to the Nelson Mandela
Foundation.

"It is up to the present and next generations to
take up the cudgels where you (Mandela) have
left off. It is up to them, through service to
deepen our democracy; entrench and defend our
constitution; eradicate poverty; eliminate
inequality; fight corruption, and serve always
with compassion, respect, integrity and
tolerance," the foundation said in a statement.
"Xenophobia, racism and sexism must be fought
with tenacity, wisdom and enlightenment."

As fears of more attacks grow, South Africans
have taken to social media and the streets to
protest xenophobia and violence.

It's the same trick that's played on stupid poor white people in this country. The government and media find a scapegoat for problems and funnel the anger towards that scapegoat while they avoid actually solving or even addressing the real problems.

This is old news (good post, just that I've read about hate crimes against immigrants in South Africa before).

south africans are the biggest ? in africa , i been sayin this.

they love the racist boers but ? their own.

What about the Rwandan genocide or the Biafran civil war or the attacks against Christians carried out by Islamic extremists in Kenya? South Africa has a high crime rate. It would have been someone if it wasn't immigrants.
In Zambia, local radio station QFM said it will
not play South African music in solidarity with
    the victims.

I don't really understand what the point of this is when the musicians are probably as against the attacks as they are. I don't think it's 'regular', 'everyday' South Africans attacking the immigrants, it's probably 'criminals'. I could understand boycotting trade or not working with the South African government until it did something to help the situation.

Most of the attacks have erupted in poor and
    marginalized areas.

    That's not surprising.

All of the imaginary borders in Africa were set up by colonialists. Some of the same ethnic groups indigenous to South Africa are found in neighboring countries.

I'm almost certain Mugabe has (either himself or arranging for it to happen) killed, mutilated or in some way tortured more Africans than any of the people involved in these crimes.

White minority are still the richest in SA , while SA blacks are still in poverty , the SA government always does ? to appease the white people in SA, and blacks still work minial jobs for White SAs and are mistreated.

None of that means they love boers

Could this be something like tribal warfare? That type of thing has going on for centuries. We AA have the luxury to unite (even though we don't but that's another story)

I doubt it's tribal warfare a lot of the foreigners come from Zimbabwe and they have the same tribal origins.

The people don't have jobs are blame foreigners it's that simple

Desperate people do desperate things. The economy isn't great in South Africa and foreigners taking the few jobs that are there makes people resentful. When people can't feed their kids or themselves, they're gonna look for a scapegoat.

It's more competition for resources....same reason some AAs here are willing to ? their own for a drug spot or just getting rid of competition in general. The people of SA now are playing the same game, actually they been doing this and worse for awhile now, the murder rate in SA is the 2nd or 3rd highest in the world smh

I went to South Africa in 07 you could tell the government was going to ? since at that time Mandella was older and out of control. Rich blacks in government were not helping issues of poverty. ? been rotting for years down there.

Also i went to cape town by the coast and got weird vibes there that black people felt inferior to rich whites down there. And i spent days down in the slums at schools and with the people and its a stark contrast to the nicer areas o Cape Town. Whereas Jo'Burg more inland black folk felt more upbeat and happy and virtually no white people were there. I swear being in Soweto was dope as ? . Cats were friendly as ? . It was truly the first time i didn't feel like a minority lol.

yes this is due to the legacy of the atrocious apartheid system that ? up my peeps heads, they closed off the ghettos and let peeps do what the ? they want, pigs didn't even keep crime statistics during that era

but you can't blame the next man for this ? , mandela & mbeki had only one or two terms to make decades of fuckries correct, but you can't keep blaming the apartheid era for this ? . Zuma is a president who fought for the anc on the frontlines, he wasn't a so called intellecutual soulja, not that it makes a diffrence, but he should know better because of this, excuses times is up, he is a ? very corrupt piece of ? mudda focker, i respect my elders, especially the ones that fought for my peoples freedoms, worldwide, but theirs no excuses, he's doing left & right bribes in the millions of dollars type range that could easily fix up the ghettos in south africa

peeps have legitmate economic grievances in principle that the goverment has been turing a blind eye too since zuma came to power, obviously there targeting the wrong mudda fockers, but the principle, in terms of yoooo, ? ? up, the goverment don't give a ? about us is legitimate & this is coming from someone who lost my cousin over there due to the same ?
