(CNN)South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham will call Monday for the removal of the confederate flag from state grounds, a source familiar with the decision told CNN.

Graham, a 2016 presidential candidate, will make his announcement during a press conference with South Carolina's Republican governor, Nikki Haley, at 4 p.m. Monday.

Lindsey Graham on Charleston shooter: 'It's him ... not the flag'

He will call for the flag to come down and be put in a museum.

Graham has been quietly urging his fellow elected representatives inside South Carolina over the past few days to make this move.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) will call for the Confederate flag to be removed from the state capitol, multiple outlets reported Monday.

Haley is set to speak at a press conference at 4 p.m. ET Monday. According to CNN and AP, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) will join the governor and call for the flag to be placed in a museum.

Graham previously said the flag "is part of who we are," but that he would be "fine" with taking the symbol down.

Debate over the flag was reignited after nine people were shot and killed during a prayer meeting at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina. When flags were lowered to half-staff in remembrance of those who were killed, the Confederate flag -- which has flown next to the Confederate Soldier's Monument since 2000, when it was removed from atop the South Carolina capitol dome -- didn't budge, because it's held in place by a padlock. By law, the flag couldn't be removed.

Several politicians have weighed in on the flag, with 2012 presidential rivals Mitt Romney (R) and President Barack Obama agreeing that the flag should come down. Some South Carolina politicians had a different take, with Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) saying removing the flag "should not be the immediate solution."

It's sad that this even has to be discussed or debated..it should have been in a museum a long time ago.

Imo anybody that argues the issue is a racist.

its not enough to pull down the confederat battle flag. there are numerous states in the south whose current state flags are based on the old confederate national flag.

TX state flag has the lone star replacing the confederate stars and swaps the white and red stripes. the TX and NC state flag are obviously based on the confederate flag with a few very small changes. everyone who sees the tx and nc state flags see the confederate flag. the only ppl who dont see it are those who choose to not see it.

I concur! When did losers get to dictate terms? Did they forget that they lost?

At any rate, it is deflecting from the bigger picture. Getting rid of the flag doesn't change the mindset.

It takes two seconds to Google, boo.

The Texas flag and it's design has no correlation to the Confederate flag.

The Texas Flag Code assigns the following symbolism to the colors of the Texas flag: blue stands for loyalty, white for purity, and red for bravery.[14] The code also states that single (lone) star "represents ALL of Texas and stands for our unity as one for ? , State, and Country." The "lone star" is, in fact, an older symbol predating the flag which was used to symbolize Texans' solidarity in declaring independence from Mexico.[15] It is still seen today as a symbol of Texas' independent spirit, and gave rise to the state's official nickname "The Lone Star State".

The idea of the single red stripe and single white stripe actually dates back to the short-lived Republic of Fredonia, a small state near modern Nacogdoches which seceded from Mexico in 1826 before being forcibly re-integrated. The new state was formed through an alliance between local Anglo settlers and Native American tribes and the Fredonian flag used a white and red stripe to symbolize the two ethnic/racial groups from which the state was formed.[16] Though this rebellion ultimately failed it served as an inspiration to the later Texas Revolution.

The actual Colors represent their actual views right? Their views were ? and White Pride.

You can get into semantics all u want but that's what it boils down to, since we are discussing the COLORS right?

keep it real. this is a game of politics. it takes a 2/3 majority in the sc state assembly to get that flag taken down and i'll be shocked as hell to see that happen. what the governor just did was a great display of public relations for her state and a fellow sc senator who just happens to be running for president. she knows 2/3 of those cacs in the state assembly wont vote for that ? but she can at least say she tried. politics is all this ? is about

It's like this, as long as we live in a society of white supremacy and white privilege the flag should remain.

I'll take it step further and say as long as we live in a society of white supremacy and white privilege, the confederate flag should be waved above every capital building in this country.

The confederate flag represents the true power structure in this nation.

Removal of the flag will not erase the hatred from the heart.

though, to be fair, it also stands for political concepts that don't exist
