Melissa Mayeux, 16-Year-Old French SS, Eligible to Be Signed by MLB Team in July

French teenager Melissa Mayeux made history Monday, becoming the first female baseball player to be added to MLB's international registration list, according to MLB.com's Lindsay Berra. This means the 16-year-old shortstop will be eligible to be signed by a major league team starting on July 2.

International registration is technically open to anyone, but the list is reserved for serious prospects who have real potential. In the case of Mayeux, MLB Director of International Game Development Mike McClellan believes that to be the case.

"She's a legitimate shortstop who makes all the plays and is very smooth and fluid in the field," he said, per Berra. "She swings the bat really well and is fearless."

Mayeux comes from a baseball family, as her older brother Dylan plays for the French national team―currently as a member of the under-19 group. She's already a member of France's senior national softball team, showing she has little difficulty at the plate, regardless of whether the pitches are thrown under or overhand.

The teenager will be attending MLB's European Elite Camp this summer, one of just four French players to receive an invite, and she's scheduled to travel to Germany for a pitching and hitting camp, where two-time All-Star Steve Finley will help her work on her swing.

All of this is fantastic news for both Mayeux and young women dreaming of a future in the big leagues, although she's unlikely to be signed in July. She'll be eligible to play in the American university system if she goes unsigned, which seems to be a more likely career path for the young shortstop.

Regardless, the fact that Mayeux made the list is a testament to her abilities, and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 16-year-old.

Still say Basketball is the only pro sport where there's any chance of this happening. Lisa Leslie was Emmanuel Mudiay's size, she had to be better than some of those weak-ass guards on the bench lol.

    Naw baseball. Tennis. Golf.
Both are Very non contact sport, and are mostly based on techniques.
    Basketball is too physical.

That's why I figure a supremely skilled point guard could maybe pull it off. I'm not asking shawty to go in the low post lol.

Tennis is actually one of the worst mismatches because no woman can handle the difference in brute strength when it comes to serving. The serve strength alone kills and basically breaks the game. "In 1998, Serena and Venus Williams said they could beat any man ranked 200 or worse in a game of tennis. Karsten Braasch, ranked 203, accepted the challenge and easily beat them, 6-1, 6-2." - like damn lol. So its not just contact, its how the techniques are related to physical size and strength. Point Guard is the position least dependent on size & strength, so I figure.....

From the video I'm not impressed...not much pop in her bat, probably has something to do with her not completing her follow-through. A man wouldn't be getting a 2nd look from the pros with that swing.

If a chick is going to go it will be pitching. Like the commercial had. I chick with good control on her pitch throwing around the high 80s - low 90s.
