James Horner, the Oscar winning composer of films like Aliens, Braveheart, Star Trek: Wrath of Khan, Titanic, Avatar, and most recently Antoine Fuqua's Southpaw, has died at the age of 61 due to a plane crash.

For film as a whole, this is a huge loss. Talent like his is one that is irreplaceable. Like Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams, he has created some of the most memorable and iconic film scores ever. One of my favorite of his was James Cameron's "Aliens". He had the tough job of taking Jerry Goldsmith's work, and doing something different with it. See as "Aliens" is a vastly different film than "Alien", the score is also a very different beast altogether from the first film. It's the film that garnered him his first Oscar nomination, and put him on the map.

Obviously, the film world has lost a titan... A master of their craft. He is a talent gone way too soon. May he rest in peace.
