The Confederate flag was temporarily removed from in front of the South Carolina Statehouse on Saturday.
An unidentified black woman was about halfway up the more than 30ft steel flagpole just after dawn on Saturday when State Capitol police told her to come down. Instead, she continued up and removed the flag before returning to the ground.
The woman and another man who had entered the wrought-iron fence surrounding the flag were arrested.
The flag, which is protected by state law, was raised again a short time later. A rally by flag supporters was scheduled for later on Saturday.
Calls for removing the flag have been renewed since nine black churchgoers were killed in what police characterised as a racist attack at a Charleston, South Carolina church last week.

A woman scaled the flagpole in front of the South Carolina Statehouse Saturday morning, temporarily removing the Confederate flag that flew there. The woman was arrested by State Capitol police along with another man who had entered the grounds with her, the Associated Press reported. The flag was replaced and raised a short time later.
The woman, who has not been named by local authorities, was identified on social media as Brittany “Bree” Newsome, an activist from North Carolina. Her actions inspired the hashtag #keepitdown, which was a one of the top trending topics in the United States on Twitter Saturday. Later in the day the hashtag #FreeBree was also trending in the United States.
According to website BreeNewsome.com, which was linked to by a Twitter account belonging to a user with the name Bree Newsome and mentioned by numerous users in conjunction with the #keepitdown hashtag, Newsome is an activist and graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
“While still in high school, Newsome created an animated short, 'The Three Princes Of Idea' which earned her a $40,000 scholarship from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences,” the website states.
Calls to remove the flag, which is protected by state law, have been renewed since nine African-Americans were killed in what police have labeled a hate crime at a Charleston, South Carolina, church last week. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and a group of the state's top lawmakers called for the flag to be removed in a press conference this week. However, the proposal must be approved by the South Carolina legislature by a two-thirds majority in both the state House and Senate to take it down.
Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson chimed in on the story, commending Newsome on her actions and calling for her release. Jackson tweeted his support Saturday morning, calling Newsome's actions courageous.
Much respect to a true Black Queen Bree Newsome... -
