Ann Marie Thomas told her boss, “I’m not about to be on no scene 10 minutes doing CPR, you know how these families get.” The EMT worker was only two minutes from the scene of a baby struggling to hold on to life. When emergency dispatch tried to send Thomas to help the child, Thomas flatly refused.

In a life or death situation every minute can determine life or death for an injured person in need. Emergency dispatch strongly laid into Thomas for her dereliction of duty, saying, “Ma’am, you have to make contact with your patient. — There is nothing in the comments that states you have a hostile scene. You have to make contact with your patient!”

The stern words fell on deaf ears. The EMT worker lazily made her way to the scene, taking 8 minutes to arrive when she was only 2 minutes away. Once at the location, she refused to enter the residence until another EMT team would arrive to accompany her. All in all it took 20 minutes before the patient was engaged and taken to the hospital. The neglected child later died.

The heart-broken mother of the child had this to say. “My daughter would have been here if she just came around that corner and responded to my cry for help.”

Thomas has been fired from the Detroit Fire Department. This is not only a tragedy. It is a travesty. What would you do if this happened to you?
