Lawsuit: White Fla. Teacher Fired for Having Black Boyfriend
Audrey Dudek, a former math teacher at Edgewater High School, says she was fired in 2013 after school officials learned that her then-boyfriend, now husband, is black.
A former Orange County, Fla., schoolteacher says her choice in mate, music and friends is the reason she was fired from her job, and she has filed a lawsuit seeking justice.
According to WESH, Audrey Dudek, a former math teacher at Edgewater High School, claims she was fired in 2013 after school officials learned that her then-boyfriend, now husband, is black.
"This isn't about sending a message," Suzanne Tzuanos, an Orlando attorney whose firm is handling Dudek's case, told the news station. "This is about getting justice for a teacher who was terminated unlawfully."
According to the lawsuit viewed by WESH, school officials were "shocked and offended" after learning that Dudek's husband, Stacey Cobb, is black, and that she associated with black faculty members. The lawsuit also alleges that some faculty didn't like Dudek because she played "black music" in her classroom and some students had dubbed her classroom, "Club Audrey."
"The assistant principal complained to her to her face, talking to, and I quote, those people, referring to black members of the faculty and staff," Tzuanos told WESH.
The lawsuit also claims that during her tenure, white faculty allegedly performed a racially charged skit wearing "blackface, Afro wigs, gold teeth and baggy clothing."
In addition, Dudek claims that her performance evaluations suffered.
The school district told the news station that the teacher's contract was not renewed due to budget cuts. However, Dudek's lawyer countered:
"The budget didn't go down in that period of time. Ms. Dudek is a math teacher. There's a critical need for math teachers at Orange County Public Schools, so the district's explanation does not hold water," Tzuanos told WESH.
The Florida Commission on Human Rights investigated Dudek's claims and found there is reason to believe that Dudek was "treated differently based on her gender and race association," according to the station.
The school district "denies all allegations of discrimination by Ms. Dudek," noting it "will not comment any further due to pending litigation," WESH reports.
According to the news station, Dudek is seeking "unspecified damages for pain, suffering and loss of dignity."

Man ? ? that ?

Article is misleading.
There's a difference between being fired......and not having your contract renewed.
Granted, I wouldn't be surprised if her contract wasn't renewed because she had a black husband/boyfriend.....but I don't think she'll be able to prove that in a court of law.
The school could simply claim that she wasn't being professional by playing club music in her classroom. -
sounds like a non- case really.
-
I believe old girl but cases of racism are very hard to prove in court.
There are still a large number of rural cacs that still haven't made it to the 21st century. -
-
Hope she wins

Oh look who's thinking about me again.

Math teachers just don't get fired
They try and hold on to math and science teachers. -
i call ? .
did the school "fired", the other blk faculty member as well? u just can't get fired as a teacher, especially when u have tenure. the board of education has to fire u.
also neither the vice principle , or the principle evalutae teachers. alongside the teacher's students test exam scores, the state's board of education send some body to evaluate the teacher.
u gotta remember, we live in a sue happy society. ppl lie about all sorts of ? , to get money.
basically she was let go, and she wanted some get back. so she tried to go for broke , and use her "i faced discrimination because, i got a black husband" card. "how come she ain't report the minstrel show then, why now? -
