Rovio Entertainment’s Angry Birds game franchise now includes more than a dozen installments and spinoffs (including the somewhat misleadingly named 2015 release, Angry Birds 2), six years after the property debuted in 2009. It’s not so surprising, then, that Sony Pictures Entertainment has decided to strike while the iron’s hot and bring the angry birds, as well as their swine enemies, to the big screen with an animated feature film scheduled for 2016.

Angry Birds the movie, as written by Jon Vitti (The Simpsons Movie, Alvin and the Chipmunks) and directed by the first-timer helmers Clay Kaytis and Feral Reilly, is an origin story for the bird-pig war depicted in the Angry Birds games – a 3D adventure that promises to reveal at last “why the birds are so angry,” as the logline for the newly-released teaser trailer (see above) puts it. However, if you are hoping for more plot insight beyond that, then you’ll have to wait for the movie’s full-length theatrical preview.

Jason Sudeikis voices Red, the bad-temperd protagonist of the Angry Birds movie, while other key players include the hyperactive Chuck (Josh Gad) and the literally volatile Bomb (Danny McBride) – all of whom are briefly introduced by the movie’s teaser trailer. The Angry Birds video games have neither characters with discernible personalities nor any real narrative or mythos beyond the concept of birds fighting pigs, so Vitti is free to pretty much invent any backstory that he likes for the film’s leads in this respect… for better or worse, anyway.

Rounding out the Angry Birds voice cast are Saturday Night Live veterans-turned comedy stars Maya Rudolph, Bill Hader and Kate McKinnon, as well as Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele), Tony Hale (Arrested Development, Veep), and other assorted comedic talents.
