Chris Rock: If Jennifer Lawrence Were Black, She’d Really Have Something To Complain About

Jennifer Lawrence might not make as much as her male counterparts, but according to Chris Rock, things could be a lot harder for the star.
“Black women have the hardest gig in show business,” he said in a New Yorker profile on Saturday Night Live’s Leslie Jones. “You hear Jennifer Lawrence complaining about getting paid less because she’s a woman – if she was black, she’d really have something to complain about.”
Rock’s comments regarding Joy star refer to her widely publicized essay on gender pay inequality in Hollywood published in Lena Dunham’s newsletter. The Hunger Games star was compelled to write the essay after learning she made less money than her male costars in American Hustle following last year’s Sony hack.
Lawrence – who’s nominated for a Golden Globe (her fourth nod) for her performance in Joy – was 2015’s highest paid actress in the world after raking in $52 million this year, according to Forbes. According to the same article covering actors, Robert Downey Jr. topped the list, raking in $80 million. Altogether, the 18 highest paid actresses in the world made $660 million less than the world’s 34 highest paid actors.
Understandably, Lawrence has continued to be outspoken about wage inequality since writing the essay titled, “Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co-Stars.”
“When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with ? , I didn’t get mad at Sony,” she wrote. “I got mad at myself. i failed as a negotiator because I gave up early. I didn’t want to keep fighting over millions of dollars that, frankly, due to two franchises, I don’t need.”
Rock was interviewed for the New Yorker profile on Jones because of his instrumental role in helping the road comedian finally land her big break on SNL.
“I mentioned her to several managers and agents over the years. Everybody passed. Lorne [Michaels], because he’s the best at what he does, is the one who saw it. I don’t think he’d hired a cast member her age in a long time,” Rock said.
“Every black comedian in the country knew what I could do,” Jones said in the profile. “But that doesn’t mean everyone else is paying attention.”
When Michaels was searching for new female cast members for the sketch comedy show last December – amidst mounting criticism over the show’s lack of diversity – Rock asked the show runner to give Jones a chance to audition.
Now a fan favorite, Jones is the oldest cast member ever to join SNL. She’s also starring in the Ghostbusters reboot hitting theaters this summer.

Chris hit the nail on the head. Jennifer Lawrence has a legit gripe but her situation could be 100 times worse like many females of color who barely get any shot.
Hollywood is pushing the hell out of Jennifer Lawrence being the next "IT" female while other actresses can't even get their foot through the door. -
INB4 the feminist kills him on twitter

this ? always give you the real uncut version of ? .
-
Damn jones been grinding a long time...
-
Part of the wage gap conversation that always disturbs me...white women make 78 cents to the dollar to white men and that's an outrage to people..but black women make 64 cents and nobody gives a ? .
Shoutout to all the Black women fighting for white women's rights tho..I'm sure they'll get to your concerns eventually -
Womp womp

Chris rock the GOAT

This is always going to be the situation once you find out how much other people make.
"Oh hell no, dude gets paid that much and I do all the work..."
I look at the ? as a wake up call on how much I could / should be making. I research the ceiling in my field, and I take stock of my skills then I demand a certain amount and proceed accordingly. As long as I'm getting paid what I wanted, ? it. Like she said, it's her bad on negotiating. Hit the next MF over the head.
It could be that they're sexist, or it could be that she should've demanded more. -
if Lawrence wants more doe she's got to show more hole

Chris been said he 'Never Scared'. Meanwhile lebron can't find a way to definitively say the tamir rice situation makes him feel some type of way as the most prolific black man in that state if not the country. Sad most of these negros getting a piece of the pie to scared to say ? .

Rock can hang out and be cool with the whitest of white people and still keep it trill!!

Stop draking buddy -
Not every other ? day thank ? but yes. Can't speak for the country tbh but Toronto's new police chief is black and that brothers first move was to ban random stops, and make it harder for police carding by making those lazy ? do more paper work every time they card someone. (I.e no more pulling up on ? randomly on the street. Do your ? job) and siu has always kept cops from getting being trigger happy here. Siu on that ass as soon as a shot is fired. -
I'm about to get dressed and ? . Happy new years y'all.
-
I usually agree with Rock but I don't know about this one.
-
Chris Rock my ? & all, but that ? was needless to say & in all honestly was probably said to get his fading name out there for shock value. Of COURSE its harder for black women, but it still don't make the issue of women in general not getting a fair shake any less important. Throwin race out there for this issue wasn't necessary.
-
I agree. It doesn't negate Jennifer's argument. If anything it augments it by discussing another marginalized group
-
I honestly don't think it was a ploy to get his name out there more or ? in her argument. He in my opinion is just putting it out there that as bad as she says it is it's even worse for others.
I mean, she is everywhere right now and getting paid low, so think how bad it is for people barely even getting parts in general? Not to mention the fact that whole groups of people are underrepresented as a whole in movies and television. Not just black folks but people of color in general.
