Parents say Baltimore police brutalized son at Power Plant Live

The parents of a 24-year-old man who was arrested at Power Plant Live in downtown Baltimore last weekend said Thursday that police brutalized their son and did not charge him with a crime until they realized the extent of his injuries.

Police Commissioner Kevin Davis acknowledged during a news conference that an arresting officer broke Aaron Winston's arm, but he said medical aid was rendered immediately and that the Special Investigation Response Team, which investigates all police use-of-force incidents, was called, according to policy.

According to the police report, officers were called about 1:30 a.m. Sunday to the Mosaic Nightclub and Lounge for a dispute between a man and a woman.

Three uniformed officers responded and began to ? the man out of the club when Winston approached and "tried to stop" them, the report said.

"Stop, that's my brother!" he said, according to the report. "Why are you kicking him out?"

Winston yelled at the officers and pushed one of them, prompting the officer to try to arrest him, the report said.

Mr. Winston turned towards me in an aggressive manner with both hands [clenched] in fists," the arresting officer wrote.

A struggle ensued and the two slipped on the wet floor of the nightclub, where the officer handcuffed Winston, the report said.

Renee Winston said her son was attending a birthday party at the Mosaic when he saw a friend being accosted by a police officer. She said her son asked the officer what was going on and was choked and thrown to the ground "like a rag doll" by another officer.

Police also arrested another man, Devron Bolden, who they said tried to interfere with Winston's arrest.

Davis said Winston was taken to the Central District Station nearby. Winston said his right arm hurt and that he wanted a medic, and he was taken to the hospital, according to the police report.

Winston's arm was broken in three places, his mother said. He had surgery Monday, and the officers returned Tuesday to serve a warrant for assault and other charges, she said.

Davis said police generally wait to file charges against an injured suspect until he or she has been treated. Officers violated policy by not remaining with Winston while he was in the hospital, Davis said.

Renee Winston said the doctor told them her son wasn't well enough to be released, so he spent another day at the hospital, then was booked and released on his own recognizance Thursday night.

Renee Winston said the nurse told her the officers called her son a "hoodlum."

"He is not a hoodlum," she said. "My son works down at the shipyard. He has a very good job. He finished high school. He is a good son. ... I am just devastated."

Winston was charged with second-degree assault, disorderly conduct, obstructing and hindering, interfering with arrest and failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order.

The Rev. Cortly "C.D." Witherspoon, a local activist who organized the Thursday morning news conference outside Power Plant Live, called for the venue to release surveillance footage of the incident.

Davis said the Police Department is working with the nightclub to obtain any surveillance footage that might exist. He asked anyone who was inside at the time, especially anyone who took cellphone video of the incident, to come forward to police.
