Question for the board; Would you consider Ray Charles the father of modern Rock music, Rock N Roll and/or R&B? Obviously people were making music before Ray Charles. Obviously he was influenced by people, but those people were less popular. If you had to pick a starting point for the modern era would it be a mistake to start with Ray Charles?

I Got A Woman – Ray Charles 1954
Rock Around The Clock – Bill Haley and the Comets 1954
Johnny B Goode – Chuck Berry – 1958
The Twist – Chubby Checker 1959

What if somebody had a gun to your head, or if you were on Jeapordy or Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and they asked; Who is the Father of the modern era of music?

    What would you say?

Ray Charles brought in the church rhythm and added country aspects to soul.

James Brown brought in the breaks. Nobody was doing what he was doing. He also improvised alot. His band leader said he would just look at him to let him know what to do.

Quincy Jones had a bigger impact on music as a whole. From Big band to pop to latin music. Quincy changed the game in 5 different decades.

But When James Brown "brought the breaks" it was in the late 60s and early 70s.

I'm asking; if you were to pick a starting point for the modern era, who would it be?

I don't think James Brown is the starting point, he may have made music funkier.

But that's just my opinion, post some links!!!

What's your point? James Brown is probably the most influential artist of all time.

I agree that James Brown was influential, but to assert that he was more influential than Ray Charles, you'd have to post some links.

Of what? Lol dude set a standard of excellence that other people wanted to match and exceed. James Brown, along with Jackie Wilson are two of Michael Jackson's influence and that dude is the GOAT.

I'm not sure how this is a debate.

Big Daddy Kane who influenced Jay-Z and Biggie described his performances as "if James Brown was a hip-hop artist."

When MC Hammer thought he was cold enough to challenge MJ he went to James Brown for the co-sign

Little Richard's first big hit was Tutti Frutti which came out in 1955, a year after Ray Charles I Got A Woman

I don't think you understand my question.

I'm not asking who was the "most influential".

    I'm asking; who was first?

When did the musical style change to the three minute hit single with a structure that goes; verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus, fade out.

When did the musical style change where the accent of the drumbeat was on the 2 and the 4 count?

Who was the first Rock and Roll/R&B/Top 40 artist to put out hits consistently for an entire career, not just a one hit wonder but somebody who had longevity.

I agree that James Brown may have more influence on modern music, but I don't think he was the first one to do it.

Its like asking; who was the first rapper? and answering 2Pac because he sold the most records and had a big influence.

While its true that 2Pac sold the most records and was a big influence I'm sure we can all agree that he wasn't the first rapper. In no way was 2Pac the "Father of modern Hip Hop".

    Whats the thread title?

    Ray Charles started in 1954.

Until you post a song by James Brown that was before 1954 the goalpost remains unchanged

So you guys are saying James Brown is the "Father of modern day Rock, R&B and Top 40" but nobody is going to post a song that he made before 1954?

I posted 3 tracks that Ray made in the late 50s and early 60s and you guys haven't posted anything except clips of James Brown dancing.
