McDonald's on Thursday announced a change to their Quarter Pounder recipe.

McDonald’s on Thursday announced that it will start making one of its signature burgers with fresh beef, prompting many of its customers to wonder just what they’ve been eating all along.

The fast food giant explained it would stop using frozen beef patties in making their Quarter Pounders, a practice that has been in place for more than 40 years. Big Macs and other burgers will still be made with the frozen patties, though the company said it is open to making similar changes to other products on its menu as well.

Employees will begin cooking up the “never-frozen” meat sometime next year in the majority of its U.S. restaurants.

In making the shift, McDonald’s is seemingly taking aim at other fast food rivals like Wendy’s, which promotes its use of fresh beef as a means to make a better burger.

“Consumers are demanding more in terms of health and wellness,” analyst with brokerage Edward Jones Jack Russo told USA Today. “They want to know what’s in their products.”

Despite the change, people appear to be more confused than ever when it comes to what they’re actually eating at the fast food joint.

“Fresh beef as opposed to spoiled beef? Fresh beef as opposed to fresh kangaroo?” one perplexed consumer tweeted. “What HAVE you been using in the 1/4 pounders?”

Another tweeted: “McDonalds claiming in mid-2018 their Quarter Pounders will be cooked with ‘fresh beef’ WTF WAS IT BEFORE THEN???”

Even Wendy’s took a stab at their rival.

The recipe change comes amid McDonald’s ongoing effort to improve its image as costumers continue to move away from eating processed foods.

It was previously under scrutiny for the “pink slime” debacle — rumors that their nuggets were made with an oozy rose-colored material prompted McDonald’s to open the doors of its factories for the first time to quell concerns of its customers.

McDonald's allowed cameras into one of its secret food factories for the very first time as part of new campaign to end rumors about how its meals are made.

The restaurant has already removed artificial preservatives from its McNuggets and eliminated high-fructose corn syrup from its buns.

Its all an attempt to regain some of its lost customers — earlier this month McDonald’s Corp. acknowledged that it lost 500 million customer transactions since 2012, primarily due to its competition.
