Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith – “An Intention”

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s electronic music has often focused on her expert use of the Buchla 100 synthesizer, and not until last year’s EARS did her meditative singing become a focus. On “An Intention,” the first song released from Smith’s upcoming concept album The Kid, she further refines her vocals over unfurling electronic worlds.

According to Smith, The Kid will evoke four stages of the human lifespan, from “birth to self-awareness to the forging of one’s individual identity to old age and death.” “An Intention” sounds like it explores a stage in life when emotion is more overwhelming, a time before one even knows how to categorize their feelings. Smith accomplishes this with a thicket of instrumentation that is constantly expanding—starting first with a simple, heart-like drumbeat that blooms as high-pitched Buchla swoops and buzzing static builds. Throughout this, Smith repeats “I” as if she’s willing herself into existence, until she finally exclaims, “I feel everything at the same time.” The line is delivered like a rush of wind, and it shows Smith’s growing vocal powers. Whereas before her voice floated on the surface of her songs, it’s upfront, even aggressive on “An Intention,” helping craft an intricate web of emotion.

Bright melodies and bouncy percussion from the modular synthesist’s new album.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has shared ‘To Follow and Lead’, a bubbly new single from her upcoming album The Kid.

Smith’s new album finds her charting life from birth to death. While first single ‘An Intention’ captured childhood with a primordial murkiness, this new one comes off like an energetic teen with bright synths and playful percussion.

The Kid is out October 6 via Western Vinyl. Pre-order it here and watch Smith show off her modular orchestra below.
