(CNN)"True Detective" Season 3 is getting closer to becoming a reality.

On Wednesday, HBO programming president Casey Bloys confirmed earlier reports that "Moonlight" star Mahershala Ali has been signed to star in the third installment, and the network is currently searching for a director to oversee the season.
"When we find a director we want to hire, we'll be a go with that," he said.
The first season of "True Detective" aired in 2014 and quickly became a breakout hit, with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey earning accolades and awards attention.

The second season, however, failed to hold momentum and was widely panned for its writing and pacing.
It starred Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch.
Bloys, who did not oversee the second season as he only took over as the network's programming head in May 2016, said he thinks the extra time they've taken to craft Season 3 will ultimately benefit the series.
Bloys said he's read five "great" scripts from "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto so far.
"I know they've talked about perhaps [Season 2] was rushed into production, but I can tell you we're taking our time with the scripts," Bloys said. "We're taking our time and I think it's paid off."
No further casting announcements have been made.
Ali is best known for his work in best picture Oscar winner "Moonlight," a role for which he won the best supporting actor award.

He was such a better actor than necessary in Luke Cage.

I still need someone to get me in touch with his stylist for HOC.

When his character got killed in Luke Cage I almost stopped watching. I don't think they expected him to do so well when they casted him. Or he didn't want to be on the show longer than a season.

There off GP. I hope they go back to the 2 main character format from first season. Having 4 was too much for s2

I was so hyped for season 2 and couldn't get past the 2nd episode.

The most depressing 2 hours of TV I've ever seen.

    Season 2 sucked

That was prolly the biggest dropoff from s1 to s2 in the history of television.

I was gonna say The Wire but...

Season 1 True Detective >>> Season 1 Wire

So the dropoff was more drastic

Great pick for a lead. Hopefully Pizzolatto doesn't rush this season and we get something spiritually closer to S1. Doubt Fukunaga is available but HBO should throw as much as he asks for his way.

Season 2 was way too convoluted. Hopefully this season will rectify the mistakes and bring reverence back to the franchise

I liked it, and I think season 2 is better looking back at it than in the moment. I still think season 2 was better than 5. For me it goes 4,1,3,2,5. Every one being good television.

It is the sacred cow of the IC tho.

Don't agree but s2 of the wire was trash and the worst season of the show.

This. Season 5 was the weakest to me overall. Season 2 was actually quite good imo. Some important events occur in season 2 that will dictate how key scenes play out later in the series. Not to mention it actually explores how the blue collar working class is rapid declining in urban areas due to automation. Which draws a striking similarity to the issues coal miners are facing in rural America and Appalachia today

Season 2 is great because of the contrast it shows between how the Barksdale org/Prop Joe does business and how big time organized criminals like The Greek handle theirs. Avon, Stringer, Prop Joe, basically every top street dudes except for Marlo (who is basically out the game by the end) are all dead or in jail and for the Greeks org it's still business as usual and they basically supply the streets. Without Season 2 you get none of that.
