Police: Killings Of Two Black Men In Baton Rouge Likely Racially Motivated

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Police believe the slayings of two black men in Baton Rouge were likely racially motivated and said Sunday they have a suspect — a 23-year-old white man — in custody.

The suspect, Kenneth Gleason, was being held on drug charges. Authorities do not yet have enough evidence to charge him with murder, Baton Rouge Sgt. L’Jean McKneely told The Associated Press.

McNeely said shell casings from the shootings linked the two slayings and a car belonging to Gleason fit the description of the vehicle police were looking for. He said police had collected other circumstantial evidence but he wouldn’t say what it was.

“There is a strong possibility that it could be racially motivated,” he said.

The shootings happened about 5 miles from each other. The first occurred Tuesday when 59-year-old Bruce Cofield, who was homeless, was shot to death. The second happened Thursday when 49-year-old Donald Smart was gunned down walking to work at a cafe popular with LSU students, McKneely said.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Gleason had an attorney or when his first court appearance would be.

Detectives searched Gleason’s home on Saturday and found less than a gram of marijuana and vials of human growth hormone in his bedroom, according a police document. After Gleason was read his Miranda rights, he claimed ownership of the drugs, the document said.

Suspect questioned about homicides police called 'possibly racially motivated' - but bond set at $3,500 on drug counts only

Lacking sufficient evidence for murder charges against Kenneth Gleason — the man Baton Rouge police questioned about two apparently random, possibly racially motivated killings — his bond was set Sunday evening at $3,500 only on drug possession counts.

Kenneth Gleason, 23, who was taken into custody Saturday, remains a person of interest in the two homicides — one Tuesday and the other Thursday that occurred some five miles apart and both between 10:45 p.m. and 11:15 p.m., said Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman Sgt. L'Jean McKneely. In both killings, the shooter was wearing dark clothes, including possibly a tactical vest, and carrying a 9-mm handgun.

Both happened under similar circumstances: The gunman shot a lone pedestrian from inside a red "small, older sedan with shiny rims" and then exited the vehicle and "shot them to death," according to an internal Baton Rouge police bulletin that was disseminated to Louisiana law enforcement. Both victims were black men with no known prior relationship to Gleason, who is white.

"We believe (the shootings) could possibly be racially motivated," McKneely said Sunday. However, he noted that investigators are still exploring other possibilities, both including and excluding Gleason.

Shell casings matched from the two killings and Gleason's car fit the description police were searching for, McKneely said. He mentioned there is other circumstantial evidence but declined to elaborate because the investigation is ongoing.

Detectives on Saturday searched Gleason's home at 5144 Sandy Ridge Drive, where he lived with his parents. They found marijuana and human growth hormones in his bedroom and bathroom, noting he did not have valid prescriptions for the drugs, according to his arrest report.

State District Judge Trudy White set bond at $3,500 Sunday evening, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office. Information about whether he posted bond was not immediately available.

They didn't have enough evidence to charge him for the murders. He was already being held on drug charges so the bail was set for that. Crazy he could be set free even though they pretty much certain he did it. Hopefully he's too broke to make bail.

Person of interest in deadly shootings out on bail

BATON ROUGE- A person of interest in connection with two deadly shootings in Baton Rouge is out of jail this morning.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office is investigating 23-year-old Kenneth Gleason's connection to the slayings on Florida Boulevard and Alaska Street last week.

EBRSO homicide division and Baton Rouge Police Department were investigation the fatal shootings. During the investigation, BRPD detectives identified Gleason as a suspect.

The deadly shootings were five miles apart. Authorities say the shootings are very similar in nature, and were possibly racially motived.

Gleason was in jail on drug charges. Detectives found human growth hormone and marijuana inside Gleanson's parents home while executing a search warrant.

Gleason has not been charged in connection to either shooting.

Smh.. White Privilege wins out again.. This would never happen to black man accused/suspected of killing two white people.. Even if they were still building a case against him for murder.. They wouldn't let him out on bail.. The bail would be jacked up to some crazy amount thanks to the prosecutors trying to paint the ? as drug dealer because of weed & HGH.. In order to keep him locked up while they continue to investigate...

Baton Rouge shootings: 'Person of interest' released from jail after drug arrest

Police say Kenneth Gleason, a white 23-year-old, ‘has not been cleared’ after shootings of two black men officers say may have been racially motivated

A 23-year-old white man whom police called a “person of interest” in the fatal shootings of two black men in Baton Rouge has been released from jail after his arrest on drug charges over the weekend.

Sgt Don Coppola, a Baton Rouge police department spokesman, said on Monday that Kenneth Gleason “has not been cleared” and remains a “person of interest” in the shootings. A homicide detective’s report described Gleason as a “suspect” in the case.

The shootings happened about five miles from each other. The first occurred on Tuesday night when 59-year-old Bruce Cofield, who was homeless, was shot dead. On Thursday night, 49-year-old Donald Smart was killed while walking to his job as a dishwasher at a cafe popular with Louisiana State University students.

Sgt L’Jean McKneely, another police spokesman, has said there is a “strong possibility” that the shootings were racially motivated. On Monday, the interim police chief, Jonny Dunnam, said in a text message that investigators “still don’t know for sure what the possible motive is”.

Gleason was released on $3,500 bond late on Sunday. The East Baton Rouge district attorney Hillar Moore said he did not know if Gleason had an attorney.

Detectives searched Gleason’s home on Saturday and found nine grams of marijuana and vials of human growth hormone, according to the detective’s report. After Gleason was read his Miranda rights, he claimed ownership of the drugs, the document said.

McKneely said on Sunday that shell casings from the shootings linked them and a car belonging to Gleason fit the description of the vehicle police were looking for. He said authorities had collected other circumstantial evidence but he would not say what it was.

In both shootings, the gunman fired from his car then walked up to the victims as they were lying on the ground and fired again multiple times, according to McKneely, who said neither victim had any prior relationship with Gleason.

Smart’s aunt, Mary Smart, said Smart had a son and two daughters. She declined to comment on the police suggestion that her nephew might have been shot because of the color of his skin.

I'm not seeing anything about him bonding out again.

It looks like they have a tight ass case forming against him.

But the fact that they let him out on bail at all is ? up when you got teens spending years in Rikers with no trial over stealing a damn backpack.

Baton Rouge man to be booked in two 'brutal' killings, third shooting over past week

A man named a person of interest in two recent Baton Rouge homicides will be booked in the slayings, Baton Rouge police announced on Tuesday.

Kenneth Gleason, 23, will be booked on two counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of Bruce Cofield, 59, on Sept. 12 in the 3400 block of Florida Street and Donald Smart, 49, on Thursday in the 3000 block of Alaska Street.

Baton Rouge police have previously said the shootings may be racially motivated, but on Tuesday police said they would not speculate on a motive, calling it "an ongoing investigation."

At a news conference Tuesday, Baton Rouge Interim Police Chief Jonny Dunnam called the two slayings "brutal murders" and said that if Gleason wasn't arrested, "he could have potentially created a terror in the fabric that holds this community together."

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore said that DNA obtained from spent shell casings found at the scene of the homicide on Alaska Street on Thursday matched a swab from Gleason, ultimately leading to his arrest in the homicides.

It’s “extremely unusual” to find DNA on shell casings, Moore said, calling it "a credit" to the collaborative effort among law enforcement in the case.

Gleason will also be booked in a shooting on Sandy Ridge Drive, near where he lives, that occurred on Sept. 11. Two residents were inside a home when shots were fired, but neither were injured.

Moore said Tuesday that over the last week, several descriptions of a white male with a red car were given to law enforcement. On Saturday, an officer stopped a vehicle matching the description and took Gleason into custody, where he was questioned. Search warrants were issued, which led to Gleason's arrest on two unrelated drug counts.

Gleason posted a $3,500 bond and was released from prison on Sunday.

On Monday, Gleason was arrested again on a theft that occurred Wednesday at a book store on Towne Center Boulevard. Moore said that Gleason is accused of stealing a copy of "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy."

He was booked into prison on one count of theft and released on a $500 bond early Tuesday.

Gleason was named as a person of interest in the killings over the weekend, but police said then that they did not have enough evidence to arrest him on murder counts.
