Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has big plans for his twilight years. After getting pardoned by President Trump for his conviction regarding racial profiling of Latinos, the 85-year-old is making it his mission to revive the unfounded and racist theory that President Obama is not a U.S. citizen. In 2012, Arpaio used tax-payer money to send a deputy to Hawaii on a wild birth certificate hunt.

“It has to go down as the biggest cover-up in the history of the United States,” Arpaio told Mercury News regarding the proven myth that the country’s first black president was born in Kenya. “Nobody wants to touch it.”

Perhaps the reason no one “wants to touch it” has to do with Obama releasing his long-form birth certificate in 2011, even though he shouldn’t have had to capitulate to the demands that a black man be required to show his papers to a bunch of bigots.

The president and former reality star parlayed birther hysteria into an actual political career which resulted in him finally admitting in 2016 that Obama was born in Hawaii. Although Arpaio breaks with Trump on this, admittedly reluctant stance, he still has nothing but admiration for the pumpkin-hued fascist.

“It took me 85 years to finally know in my own heart who my hero is,” Arpaio told Mercury News. “You know who that person is? The president of the United States.”

In an interview on Tuesday afternoon, Arpaio, who lost re-election in November after 24 years in office, said the Fresno event was an example of his renewed “mission” to fight for conservative ideas around the country. That includes, he said, his continuing (and widely debunked) effort to prove that former President Barack Obama’s birth certificate is fake.

One thing he appears to disagree with the president about is Obama’s heritage. Arpaio said he plans on continuing a long-running investigation into Obama’s birth certificate, which he sent a deputy to Hawaii to conduct as sheriff. He wants Congress to pass a law requiring background checks for presidential candidates.

Obama released his long-form birth certificate in 2011 showing he was born in Hawaii, and even Trump — who had eagerly embraced the conspiracy theory — acknowledged last year that the former president was born in the U.S. But Arpaio was quick to point out Trump’s brief remarks about the issue in September 2016 never directly addressed the authenticity of the birth certificate itself.
