The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People released a statement today denouncing Donald Trump’s visit to the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum on Saturday, justifying their attack by saying the president’s record on civil rights has “been abysmal.”

The president and CEO of the NAACP Derrick Johnson released the following statement in response to the White House’s announcement that Trump will be attending the opening ceremonies:

President Trump’s statements and policies regarding the protection and enforcement of civil rights have been abysmal and his attendance is an affront to the veterans of the civil rights movement. He has created a commission to reinforce voter suppression, refused to denounced white supremacists, and overall, has created a racially hostile climate in this nation.”

The specific issues Johnson references include Trump’s widely criticized response to the Charlottesville, Virginia racist rally, in which he blamed violence on “many sides” — despite a white supremacist killing a woman.

During today’s briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded to these objections, saying, “I think that would be honestly very sad. I think this is this is something that should bring the country together to celebrate the opening of this museum and highlighting the civil rights movement and the progress that we’ve made.”

Additionally, Dr. Amos Brown — an NAACP board member — hit Trump with even harsher terms than Johnson.

“As a freedom fighter and contemporary of Emmett Till, Trump’s visit is an insult. He has never been a supporter of civil rights or equal opportunity or justice. He’s been silent on civil rights issues, and his silence speaks volumes,” said Brown.

John Lewis cancels trip to civil rights museum, citing Trump’s attendance

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. John Lewis cancelled his plans to attend the grand opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum this weekend because he would have had to share a stage with President Donald Trump.

But the Atlanta Democrat said Thursday afternoon that he would reconsider if Trump chooses not to attend the event.

“Right now we’re not going,” Lewis told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But there’s a possibility that the head man may not show up, may cancel.”

Lewis’ comments came less than a day after he expressed doubts about whether he could “live with myself” if he appeared on the same program as his political nemesis at this weekend’s ribbon-cutting of the museum in Jackson, Miss. The lawmaker said it was not appropriate for Trump to be invited given his response to white supremacist rallies in Charlottesville, Va., this summer.

“I think his presence would make a mockery of everything that people tried to do to redeem the soul of America and to make this country better,” Lewis said Wednesday.

Lewis’ House colleague Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., also announced Thursday he would not attend the museum’s opening event.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said it was “unfortunate that these members of Congress wouldn’t join the President in honoring the incredible sacrifice civil rights leaders made to right the injustices in our history.”

“The President hopes others will join him in recognizing that the movement was about removing barriers and unifying Americans of all backgrounds,” Sanders said in a written statement.

Lewis and Trump have traded barbs for the better part of the year after Lewis, a high-profile Hillary Clinton supporter, said he didn’t see Trump as a “legitimate president” in January. Trump then took to Twitter to call Lewis’ Atlanta-based 5th Congressional District “crime infested” and “in horrible shape.” Lewis later skipped Trump’s inauguration and first congressional address in protest.

The NAACP has also called on Trump to skip the event.

Not all black lawmakers shared Lewis and the NAACP’s view. U.S. Rep. David Scott, D-Atlanta, said it would benefit Trump to visit the civil rights museum.

“If anybody needs to go it’s Trump,” Scott said. “The president clearly needs to be educated and informed on racial policies. He has to begin to become more sensitive and understanding of the fact that much of what he’s done has given the NAACP and so many in the black community a negative impression of him.”

Civil Rights Museum to hold phony event for Trump since no one wants him at the real one

Donald Trump’s toxic racism is forcing the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum to hold a separate event to cater to him, away from public scrutiny, on its opening day.

NBC News reports that the White House and local authorities were pushed to create an event segregated from the previously scheduled public ceremony after key civil rights leaders and speakers decided to boycott Trump.

Perhaps seeking to avoid boos and other public expressions of displeasure, Trump will “tour the museum and speak at a private program in the morning, and the public ceremony will begin afterward.”

Mississippi Republican Gov. Phil Bryant, an avowed Trump supporter, made the invitation, apparently unconcerned with melding an event celebrating racial inclusivity with a man who has openly embraced white supremacy.

NBC reports that several people affiliated with the museum “had no idea” the governor had made the offer, and only learned about it earlier in the week.

Georgia Democratic Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights icon who headed the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and helped to organize the 1963 March on Washington, is the most prominent figure who recoiled at Trump’s invitation.

Lewis issued a joint statement with Mississippi Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson announcing that they would not be attending. “President Trump’s attendance and his hurtful policies are an insult to the people portrayed in this civil rights museum,” the two representatives noted.

In response, the Trump White House had the nerve to lecture Lewis, insinuating that he does not understand the civil rights movement. Lewis lived the movement, and bled for it.

The NAACP called on Trump not to attend and said his presence would be an “affront” to civil rights heroes.

Chokwe Lumumba — the Democratic mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, and former Secretary of the Navy — and Mississippi Democratic Gov. Ray Mabus also said they would not attend because of Trump.

Trump is a racist who has used the office of the presidency to praise and extol the virtues of white supremacists. He has targeted black athletes for protesting police brutality, while attacking the Latino and Muslim communities.

Through his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, Trump has sought to enable police brutality targeted at minority communities, while attacking programs like affirmative action.

Trump is diametrically opposed to American equality and justice. He tried — as he so often has — to hijack a civil rights moment to polish his tarnished public record. He is again facing a grassroots rejection, and will be forced away from normal Americans. Instead, he will be surrounded in his sycophantic bubble.
