Mass Effect 2 and MAG: Massive Action Game are the two big new releases for this week

Mass Effect 2 looks to dominate the big releases this week with over 470,000 preorders. Going by previous pre-order to week one scalars, an opening of over 800,000 in the Americas is looking likely - only Halo, GTA, Call of Duty and Gears of War have had bigger openings on Xbox360 to date. With a strong launch also assured in Europe, Mass Effect 2 should easily pass one million units worldwide in week one.

MAG also looks like having a strong first week - over 300,000 is looking likely although the title benefited from some strong pre-order incentives along with a public beta, both of which will have helped to inflate pre-orders a little hence the seemingly more conservative week one estimate. Two Wii titles also have big releases this week - Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (~70,000 week one) and No More Heroes 2 (~20,000 week one).

Looking ahead, ? of War III continues to add around 10-15k units per week, with increases closer to launch I'd be expecting final pre-orders and week one sales to be similar to Mass Effect 2, possibly a little higher. BioShock 2 looks slightly disappointing based on current pre-orders. The original game sold almost identically to the original Mass Effect but that isn't looking to be the case with the sequels - a week one of around 500,000 combined across Xbox360 (65%) and PS3 (35%) is looking likely, stronger than the original game but not as big as many of the other Q1 2010 releases.

It is interesting to observe some of the Xbox / Playstation splits for multi-platform titles. While Bioshock, Aliens vs Predator and Alpha Protocol show splits in line with the hardware ratio, titles like Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Dante's Inferno and Final Fantasy XIII show splits strongly in favour of PS3 and for various reasons. For Battlefield, the PS3 version has an exclusive demo (you'll notice the 360 version is now starting to catch up as the launch approaches), Dante's Inferno seems to be picking up interest from the ? of War audience and Final Fantasy has always been associated more with the Playstation brand than Xbox.
