Nintendo's revealed one of the reasons behind the perceived high cost of the 3DS – gamers loved it when it was revealed at E3 2010 in June.

CEO Satoru Iwata told analysts during a meeting yesterday (reported by the Japanese branch of Bloomberg and translated by Andriasang) that the 3DS' 25,000 yen price (just under £190) is the result of a number of factors, one of which was the reaction to the system's E3 reveal.

Yesterday Nintendo announced a 26th February release date for the 3DS in Japan. It'll release in Europe and the US in March.

Nintendo had planned to release the 3DS this year, but decided against it in order to prevent shortages.

The 3DS is the successor to Nintendo's the phenomenally successful DS handheld series. It includes a motion sensor and a slider that can be used play games in 3D without the need to wear glasses. The Japanese console manufacturer reckons it'll sell four million of the things in its first month on sale.
