Alright, so after about 11 years being in and with 7 months left in my contract.. I’m actually thinking if this is the time to go. Wifey kinda pushing for me to get out. A lot because of how things have gone and the threat of a war. Normally I’d go all in with the “it’ll be ok” response but these days I don’t blame her. Along with the fact that I’m kinda at a place where I want something new.

The security of being in the military is what’s the major thing. The insurance, overall benefits kinda spoil you. Especially when you got a family. I got a couple of things in mind. Taking classes to become an insurance agent. Maybe get her uncle to help me out in becoming a cop in Fredricksberg, VA (not something I wanna do forever) while I go to school. It’s just a big ass step.

    Anyone been in this situation?

Since you not retiring gather all medical records from your active time to take to VA Hospital when you get out so you can get some service connection disability money coming in for rest of your life tax free. 10% service connection$300 a month-100% Serv Connectin $3800 a month till you die.

You say 100% like the VA just handing them ? out like candy haha

Not at all was just giving him range in figures

100% is very hard unless you got tbi, ptsd, schizophrenia
? mostly be getting 10% for tinnitis, 10% ? deformity for free viagra, 20% for bad knees, sleep apnea 40-70%. These are the most common I see

its hard to get the VA to approve anything, they straight up told me yea I'm injured for 2 things but since they are both 10% they will only pay for one.

you have to be damn near broken before you get out to get 30% or higher

I’m an E-5. Could be an E-6 by the end of the year. If I stay in realistically I could be an E-7 at 20.

no diss but SMH @ u being an E-5 in the Army after 11yrs

how u figure u can make E-6 within 7mos unless u plan on re-enlisting? u got to have at least 2 yrs left in order to get promoted to E-6 (unless ? has changed)

besides if u only a SGT after 11yrs then that tells me u ain't doing so good as far as being a Soldier(ie. u fat/injured/got an Art.15).......after all the deployments lately there is no excuse to be less than an E-6(p) by 10yrs in

u need to get tf out and at least finish school..........then if u don't like civvie life while in school u will at least have an opportunity to come back in as an officer as long as u are still under the age limit

do another 9 yrs as O1 thru O3 with enlisted bonus pay is way more beneficial than being an NCO struggling to not get QMPed

how did u end up with 11yrs in and only made it to SGT?

but then again the Army thrives on mofos being comfortable and not really having ambition

Got damn bruh! I felt some of that.

Outsider question, but what all are promotions in the military based on?

Army is basically time with a board of Senior NCO's

Navy and Airforce have to test out

    Don't know about Marines.

Officers for Marines and Army is all time based until Maj.

^^^^the Army statement above is not true

I can only speak for the Army tho

in the Army for enlisted/officer, it's a combo of time in grade (TIG) and Time in Service (TIS)
for junior enlisted E1 - E4 all promotions are local (the company CDR promotes u).......u can get a waiver for TIS or TIG, but ur CDR still has to approve ur promotion

for junior NCOs E5 - E6, u have to be boarded, approved by a local unit board of senior NCOs, and have a certain amount of promotion points..........ur unit field CDR has to approve ur board and ur points......then ur points are sent and validated at DA........DA posts promotion points for every MOS each month like a score, everybody who has more promotion points than that number for that MOS gets promoted the next month.............if u have less then u don't get promoted......certain MOSs have higher posted scores than others which makes it harder to get promoted........so smaller and/or non-needed MOSs tend to get promoted slower

for senior NCOs E7-E9, a DA centralized board picks u after u validate ur personnel file......a board of other senior NCOs picks u based on ur previous ratings (NCOERs).........if u got less than a 2 over 1 in any of ur ratings u can pretty much guarantee u ain't never getting promoted unless ur MOS is truly needed

for officers, a DA centralized board picks u up after u validate ur file, u also have to have a certain amount of TIG and fulfill specific assignments in your branch in order to be consider fully qualified and ready for promotion to the next grade.......u are evaluated for promotion based on ur ratings (OERs) and u are also tracked with ur peers.........u get anything less than a top 20% grade in ur unit u can pretty much forget becoming a field officer (O4 and up)........if u get passed over by DA twice, ur career is done

I think the Army just recently consolidated the rating systems for both officers and NCOs not too long ago

and I'm showing my age cuz when I was in, the promotion point scale for E5/E6 went up to 1000 pts and we had to pass common task testing in order to get promoted

by the time I got out it was an 800 pt scale and common task testing was no longer required

    nah I didn't intend to offend t/s

I'm just talking to him like how real NCOs who give a ? really talk to their soldiers

when I was coming up we had mentors who would keep it real to make sure u were on point as far as ur career/life was concerned

by the time I got out, the Army was no longer breeding young NCOs to have leadership skills cuz DA was only interested in deploying mofos for unnecessary wars

depending on his MOS he only cheating himself if he ain't striving to "be all he can be"

I hate to see cats get caught at a crossroads cuz they weren't set up to succeed by their leadership

no soldier should be needing advice about what they are going to do next if they have been working towards specific goals like they should

Army life is too harsh to just be taking checks and chilling without a real plan......especially with the way mofos been forced to deploy

that's like an Airborne soldier waiting until he actually gets to the door of the plane to jump, and now he wanna be confused on whether being a paratrooper is a good idea...........if he got doubt at that point then his leadership obviously set him up for failure

and that ain't how it's supposed to work from my personal experience

Navy advancement especially in my rate is difficult as ? once you get past E-5. I took my exam a month ago and find out the results next month. Even still advancing isn’t even the issue.

? I look like E-5 at 11 in the Army. Granted in the long run y’all advancement is better than the Navy. Those exams mixed in with the eval system ? a lot of good sailors out of making rank past a certain level.

It’s still not concrete that I’m getting out yet. I just wanted to hear from people who have been in the same boat in general. From what I can see there’s quite a few here on this site. Thanks for your opinions everyone.

bet.....I read the thread and assumed u were Army

none of ur previous posts mentioned a "rate" and u gave ur rank as an enlisted paygrade

so yeah it was easy to assume Army especially considering ur worries about Trump as a CIC

and it's funny cuz I still couldn't imagine being just an E5 in any other service when there are mofos who are E7s and E8s in the Army with 11 yrs in

that's a big difference in pay to give up just to be something other than a soldier

u need to get tf out and at least finish school..........then if u don't like civvie life while in school u will at least have an opportunity to come back in as an officer as long as u are still under the age limit

do another 9 yrs as O1 thru O3 with enlisted bonus pay is way more beneficial than being an NCO struggling to not get QMPed

how did u end up with 11yrs in and only made it to SGT?

but then again the Army thrives on mofos being comfortable and not really having ambition

I’m in the Navy. I never said I was in the Army. I don’t know how muthafuckas got it twisted like that. Y’all ? assume too much.

Navy advancement especially in my rate is difficult as ? once you get past E-5. I took my exam a month ago and find out the results next month. Even still advancing isn’t even the issue.

? I look like E-5 at 11 in the Army. Granted in the long run y’all advancement is better than the Navy. Those exams mixed in with the eval system ? a lot of good sailors out of making rank past a certain level.

bet.....I read the thread and assumed u were Army

none of ur previous posts mentioned a "rate" and u gave ur rank as an enlisted paygrade

so yeah it was easy to assume Army especially considering ur worries about Trump as a CIC

and it's funny cuz I still couldn't imagine being just an E5 in any other service when there are mofos who are E7s and E8s in the Army with 11 yrs in

that's a big difference in pay to give up just to be something other than a soldier[\b]

Yea they don’t tell you that ? when you join at all. With so many people willing to join Navy over Army (probably because of the notion that it’s “safer”) they make it difficult as hell to advance. Especially with me technically being active-reserve (not as many personnel as regular active duty).

    Serious question;

    What is your rank?

I've heard that it takes approximately 20 years to make it to Captain, and another 20 years to make it to General.

How old are you? Have you been promoted? Realistically if you stick around for another 9 years what do you think your rank will be?

Lol naw 5-7 years to get CPT, enlisted and commissioned are different. Based on the fact he even made this thread means he's enlisted.

Whats the difference between enlisted and commissioned?

Enlisted are privates, specialist, corporal, sergeants & Sergeant major.

Commissioned are lieutenants, captains, majors & generals and ? .

Commissioned calls the plays. Enlisted carries them out.

    Thanks

T/S still didn't tell us his rank.

That makes all the difference. If you're still a private get out. But if you're a sergeant you could stay for another 10 years and maybe get promoted to Captain.

Captain looks really good on your resume.

U don't know what your talking about, just stop

    I know I don't know what I'm talking about.

    What is the T/S rank?

You an awkward muthfucka you know that?

I’m an E-5. Could be an E-6 by the end of the year. If I stay in realistically I could be an E-7 at 20.

no diss but SMH @ u being an E-5 in the Army after 11yrs

yeah I know......I almost went into the Marine Corps at 1st

I had no clue about promotions at all..........the Marine recruiter I had was ? dumb as ? and had me 2nd guessing whether I wanted to ? with the military at all

I met this female Army recruiter and this chick had made E5 in like 22months.....soon as she told me that I was like hell yeah I'm joining the Army SMH

what she didn't tell me was how much smutting she had to do to get promoted so fast haha

I’m in Virginia Beach right now. I just moved back here after being in New Orleans for three years. I didn’t know what the ? FTS was when I joined. Not until I was picking orders at A School and I couldn’t go to an active command.

Bruh I loved FTS. Outside of being stuck stateside. You get stationed in usually big to mid sized cities at some chill ass spots.

Had a friend that was stationed in St. Louis with a seal team. Didnt even know it was a seal team in St. Louis. She said it was random ass hell but she loved it. My homie that did 20 was stationed in J-ville, ATL, Houston, B-Ham, and Detroit. Bruh outside of B-ham and Detroit those was some GOAT spots.

After a lot of thought and weighing the options.. I’m gonna stay in. It’s just what’s best for me financially at this point. Plus the goal right now is in some form become an officer (either through LDO or some other program). I figure I’m gonna see my way through this ? no matter what. Especially after I get this degree.
