I was in Africa at the time but I had access to Voice Of America on radio and there was a weekly HipHop segment and that's the first time I heard it
Also one of my boys said when NaS dropped Stillmatic, it brought back a kinda essence to NY while he was there in '01 -

Never caught the Ether hype. Yea the song was ok and Nas said a lot of funny ? about Jay but it was like he was just playing the dozens and joanin on him. Takeover was the better song and Jay spit more factual ?

That's kind of the point of a rap battle ace.
Jay-Z did the same ? .
Also Jay spit way more subjective ? than facts in Takeover. Just because you agreed with some of his opinions it doesn't make them fact.
I like Takeover more than Ether but people have to keep it one hunnid.

I was parking my 91 toyata tercel in my back yard. They played it back a couple times. I remember finding the "hawaiin shirts" line hilarious, then realized I was rocking a bunch of them ? at the time....? ether

I also remember That the tone of the diss really stood out to me. I had never heard anything like it. It was like nas wasn't mad or angry about jay ? his baby mom's or saying foul ? about him. It was this dark disappointment and little ? scolding...i thought that was brilliant and ultimately what gave nas the W, also the sing was good
