Microsoft is preparing to launch a revision of the regular Xbox 360 controller featuring a new directional pad, according to a report.

Citing an unnamed source, Joystiq has said that the new d-pad will rise up about a quarter of an inch if you rotate it 90 degrees.

The raised d-pad could be aimed at fighting game fans, the blog speculated.

Microsoft has been pretty consistent with its controller design since the launch of Xbox 360 in 2005, although it did launch a controller with a tweaked d-pad back in 2008 to appeal to Pro Evolution Soccer fans.

Its still trash for fighting games even if they do switch the dpad, those jelly bean buttons are horrible for reacting fast

The controller still will feel garbage. You try to press it one direction, you go in another direction.

i actually give them props for this. but theres ways to just alter your old controller yourself. i wonder if Sony will follow suit and make a controller with triggers and reverses knobs. i wouldnt mind having one just for shooters, but it has to be Sony branded or nothing.

this=lawse, cause you can still get generic ? with a waaay better d-pad for for less than half of what MS will sell this ? for, 65 bucks I imagine.Gamestops 25 dollar ? might be corded, but them ? have an infinitely superior D-pad, are hard as ? to break and are 25 DOLLARS.

Good to see a company actually evolving their controller, instead of keeping the same dated, kid's size, ? up trigger controller for 15 years.

When something has to be changed numerous times, that means it wasn't done properly.

Yea, I guess...if you have hands the size of an 8 eight year old's, don't like playing shooters and can ignore the ? placement and convex design of the dual analog.

Why all those people didn't buy PS3's? Better controller alternatives geared toward the most popular genres of today and average age of today's gamer is probably one of the many reasons.

they didnt buy them because MS got to them first, plain and simple. Why didnt Microsoft fans buy the1st xbox in droves? cuz Sony got there first. MS started building theyre machine 3 mos prior to launch (hence all the hardware problems)

the average age of today's gamer? you do know that older players prefer ps3 to 360s right? Age and controller size have NO correlation whatsoever.

most popular genres of today, exactly. 360 came up when FPSs were all the rage. fighting, downloadable 2d side scrolling and driving games are clawing their way to the top again, and lets see what happens then. Compare the sales of SF4 and see whos sold more.

once again, you just sound like a hater. but I guess thats the point.

No prob.....let the American company cater towards the most popular genre in America.

You make it sound like the PS1 and PS2 were only played by kids growing up. When the PS1 dropped it was geared towards a more mature audience than Nintendo, as was the PS2.

M$ will release their new controller.

When will Sony release a "big boy" controller that you play a shooter with and fix their analogs?

Coming from a guy who plays the Wii religiously. Do you actually use the Wii Mote for games or as a ? , Mario Lover? The amount of trash invested into the system, it's kind of hard to believe people actually own one.

Shouldn't you be at the TheGamerPlace or whatever? Oh wait, that went out of business after I left. LMAO!

Anyway, the PS3 controller would be fine if it were still 1995. 3D was new so the horrible dual analog wouldn't matter. Most gamers were pre-teens so the miniature controller wouldn't matter. And Shooters weren't big so the ? up triggers wouldn't matter.

Times have changed. M$ is releasing a new controller to coincide with this that will accommodate all games...while PS3 users are stuck with a relic from the past.

someone who prefers a system that doesn't play the newest and best movie format cant call anything a 'relic from the past'.

The new 360 controller was releases because 360 owners didnt like what they had. its obvious PS3 owners ( at least not many of them) dont have the same complaint. When they do, Sony will.

I'd say about 100 million of them have the complaint. They showed it by not re-uping a third time.

Sums it all up, when Sony announced a different controller for the PS3 they got ? on from all the fans, and you see quick they changed that boomerang back to the dualshock
